Hi Guys,
Recently bought a 2.4 TE, only because i got it for stuff all.
Problem is......
It won't start, previous owner reckons it was a bent valve.
It cranks over and i have managed to get it to run once, ran fine above 2500 with a slight miss, but anything lower than that or having load on and it would just splutter and cough and then stall.
When it cranks over it will almost start and then proceed to backfire?
Pulling the head off soon, But up for any ideas as to what it could be?
Cheers
Chris

Before you go ripping heads off at least do a comp test
COuld be ignition, could be ECU, could be so many things. At least once a comp test is done you will be able to determine if is a head issue or if the comps are fine you can look elsewhere

Thanks for that, will go and get a compression tester and post the results.

Compression spec is 1320 kpa with a lower limit of 1000kpa. max allowable difference between cylinders is 100kpa.
Previous owner may have installed the cambelt incorrectly.......

Compression Test Results......
Good news:
Cylinder 1 and 2 at 165psi
Bad news:
Cylinder 3 and 4 at 0psi.
I'm Guessing blown head gasket?

Or maybe bent valves on cylinder 3 and 4. either way the head will have to come off.
Judging by my 2.4 TF it should be an easy job.

Ah, the good ol' days of working on a 4 cylinder! One head, lots of room. Unlike some other Mitsu designs I could mention . . . . .
Set it to number one top of compression stroke before you start, once the head is off do the usual - check for corrosion, cracks etc.
If you don't have a workshop manual, this one might help.

Well,
Who ever said bent valves was correct,
CYL 3 and 4's valves are stuffed,
Anyone got a rough estimation on how much this is going to cost in parts to repair?

Depends on what parts you are after, how many intake and exhaust valves, gasket set, whatever else needs doing to the head, whether or not you need to buy a manual and tools, etc.
In short, you tell us when it's fixed. My rough guess is about $200 and up.

Fair enough,
I do miss the days of the 2.6 astron motor.......
Hehe... ah the days of working on smaller engines. Twice as much work involved these days :P
As Madmax has said, depends if you need tools or if you're going to take it to an engine shop and get them to swap it over. Then you'll only need the gaskets and torque wrench to put it all back together.
Let us know how it goes. And possibly get some pics for the other members so they all know what a 4 cylinder engine looks like... haha :ninja:
