Shone a torch on my TS V6 auto cluster and there seems to be another function to the right of the "O/D off" light. It clearly says "Hold".

If it ever goes on, what do I hold? lol

No, seriously, any idea what it's for? Any TS models with a "hold" function?

On for dear life. It's the "you're totally ****ed now" light. Lol

Long story short, It has no function in Magnas (correct me if I'm wrong for overseas Diamante models, this may explain why it is built into the cluster).

In other manufacturers cars there is a hold button for auto transmissions and it's specific function is to alter transmission changes for slippery conditions/snow covered roads. Unless first gear is selected the car will take off in 2nd gear and shift at lower RPM points I believe (opposite to PWR button).
This is an example from a Subaru Forester:

In D, the car will move off in 2nd gear and change up to 3rd and 4th as soon as it can.
In 3, the car will move off in 2nd gear and change up to 3rd as soon as it can.
In 2, the car will use 2nd gear only.
In 1, the car will use 1st gear only.

Both explanations sound plausible! lol

Maybe not. An unimplemented gearbox function sounds on the money, nice to know.

I'm not too sure on that, as my 03 Diamante does not have a 'hold' button, and trust me on this I've been having too much fun as of late with the recent snowfall. The only light that comes on is the TCL light when I piss it off, and obviously the TCL OFF light when I don't feel like it.
Also, my 1992 Dodge Stealth automatic had the O/D off and PWR option also, but I don't see any hold illumination on it. And I have the cluster here with me.

Mr Max sir you seem to have found a magic light! Lol. Maybe its some super rare cluster that no one knows about---- Of course I could be astronomically wrong so...

Haven't had that cluster out but I doubt it has a globe or wiring behind it. lol

TCL and this mythical "hold" function (if implemented) would do pretty much the same, only the TCL would be much better at preventing wheel spin. Perhaps the cluster was designed for a future "hold" function for export models (ie uncivilized countries that actually have snow and slippery roads) but then they got stuck into the third gen Magna design and some smart engineer(*) came up with the TCL method of preventing wheel spin and the "hold" idea was scrapped?

Just a wild guess on my part though.

(*) Probably stole the design idea from BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

im 90% sure it is as Shamous says, in fact i think its been discussed before... but was YEARS ago. the reason that MitsGTO cant find it is that shes driving a 2nd gen diamante whereas, Max's Magna is the equivalent of a Gen 1 Diamante.

I thought of that afterwards. Of course there's a lot of stuff they put on cars now because as years go on people apparently are less able to drive like civilized homosapiens.

There is no lamp behind the "hold" but there is a track going to the main plug. So I say it for a feature not on our cars :)

Fair enough. I will stop watching it so closely when I drive knowing that. If it ever does come on, I will just ignore it. lol

No, seriously, mystery solved I think.

There another warning light that our cars don't use, but it our cluster. A exhaust temp waring lamp. Unsure what temp it comes on or use for :)

mazda auto trans have a hold button to hold the gear selected

S13 Nissan Silvia autos have a power and a hold switch. They pretty much hold the gears longer than what they normally do (Instead of changing at 2750 rpm, they change at 3500 rpm) for example...

I used Google.

AMC post from 2005 by Madmagna

"From memory this light comes on if there is a trans error or TCU error and the limp mode activates and holds the trans in a particular gear to enable the car to be driven to a mechanic"

Also, from a Pajero forum-
This switch, adjacent to the automatic shift lever, allows the driver to choose the gear range as appropriate.

There are three positions, POWER, AUTO and HOLD.

POWER: when switched on, the POWER light will show on the dash. In normal driving, with the shift lever in D, the power mode will operate through the full range of gears 1 to 3 plus overdrive when active. In 2, the power mode will only operate through 1 to 2, and in L, the power mode will only operate on the first gear.

AUTO: In auto mode, the transmission will automatically change between POWER and ECONOMY modes as driving conditions define, changing to POWER mode for example when starting a hill ascent.

HOLD: The HOLD light will show on the dash. The transmission will operate in ECONOMY mode through the full range of selected gears, not changing any higher than the selected gear, for example if you have selected L, the transmission will not change up to 2 or higher.
