Hi all.

My wife this afternoon says when she left to come home from work, the car jolted when she put it into drive.
It seemed to drive fine, which she did, which is a 50km trip on the freeway. She made a stop to pick up our kids, for about half hour. Got in the car, and it stared fine, reversed out, and put it in drive, and drove home...about 5 mins away.

She got home, stopped the car in the Driveway, and went to check the mail.. When she got back in the car, it wouldn't move.

I confirmed this when I got home from work, and when I tried to push it out of the way, noticed it wont budge an inch...

Back in May last year, we fell victim to the Dreaded Wave spring, and it was repaired and was told it won't happen again... The Gearbox place has done several Magna Wave Springs before, and is a Reliable Transmission place, so they know what they are doing.

The car has only done 13,000 km since the wave spring was replaced... I checked the Oil, and the level is fine, and a nice red colour.

It is still under warranty, so I'll have to get it towed in the morning.

Any ideas what has happened??

I'll update as soon as I can..

Cheers

Milo

When you put it in drive and try to move does the engine just rev freely or does it labour like your trying to take off up a steep hill?

It actually feels like the Brakes are on.... but you push the revs higher, and it lunges forward about 1m, with some weird noises coming from the Gearbox.... same as in reverse...

And No, the brakes are not locked on....

Sounds so much like a wave spring failure, except it shouldn't be. Let the trans shop sort it out.

Sounds like debris has gotten into the tranny oil pump and seized it. I would be asking the transmission mob if they pulled the whole thing apart and did a thorough inspection and clean including the oil pump for the tranny. Apparently it is critical to have the oil pump removed, pulled apart and thouroughly cleaned and inspected as part of the broken wave washer debacle, also ask them if they replaced the internal filter when they had it apart.

I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Sounds nothing like a wave spring failure, sounds like either the planetary set has died or the diff was not alligned correctly when rebuild and has failed.

I have had a couple of Magna's in here in the past where trying to get them off the towtruck was interesting because of this exact issue.

Would not surprise me if a bit of the spring was left behind, unfortunately many places will not totally dismantle and clean the trans and you may get a random bit left behind

Actually, I spoke with the Transmission bloke last night night, and from my description, he also said the Planetary set as well.. He can't look at the car till Monday, so will find out more then..

If this is the case, do you think it should be covered by Warranty? He gave 36 months/60,000km warranty, so its still within the period.
I just hope he is not going to turn around and say the issue is unrelated, and I'm up for all costs.. :(

Depends on what you initially asked for and what was on your invoice

IF you paid for a reco, then this has to be covered. If you only paid to have the wave spring replaced and nothing else, then you may have issues as it would be impossible to prove that a bit of spring was left behind.

Now I am not a trans specialist, I can find out if you wish however but I do not think that the set needs to be removed to do the wave spring but then agian to clean out the trans it would need to be removed.

Just have a chat to them first and go from there is what I would suggest

Not the wave spring then.

I've seen one web site from a trans specialist where it says the correct setup of the pump is critically important when the box is reassembled. If you get it wrong, the oil pump fails quite quickly. Hope it gets fixed - whatever went wrong - under warranty.

I just checked the invoice.... and I'd say the Whole Box was pulled apart and rebuilt...

1 set friction plates
1 Low wave Spring assembly
1 Compound Planetary Gear set assembly
1 forward Sprag assembly
1 set Hemisphere bearings
1 oil filter assembly
1 reco Torque Converter assembly

Got an Update on this.... Mal was right on the money.. The Planetary Gear set had failed..... and in a big way. The Mechanic said it had completely shattered.
All getting fixed under Warranty, so hopefully should get it back either Today or Tomorrow.. :)

Well, the Gearbox got put together, and the Torque Convertor was also stuffed, so out it all came again, another Torque Convertor put in, and finally it was given back to us.... and all covered under warranty... So pretty happy with the Outcome.... :)
