My TF broke the power steer belt and by the time I could stop on the side of the road heard a terrible noise that sounded like the belt was wrapped around something but I couldn't see the belt any where I tried to move the car to a safer place as I drove forward the engine light come on and the noise got worse and the car started to run rough and had very little power and then stalled and has not started since. I have had a better look once it was home and the part of the belt was wrapped around the bottom pulley, I checked for spark no problem but it wont start could this have knocked the timing belt out and if so what damage could I expect from this???

May have done timing belt damage, this is not uncommon as it will wrap its way through the belt cover. May also have only damaged the Crank Angle Sensor Wire, this is very common and will cause the car not to start.

Before you test for anything else, check under the belt covers for damage however

Thank you Mal I'm going to pull it apart this morning to have a look at it this morning... Just wanted to know before I started

Could it even have caused the timing belt to jump a few teeth, even if the belt seems to be in good condition still?

Thats something i have considered if it has jumped a few teeth what would happen bent valve perhaps or something worse?

Just went to line the timing marks up on the cams and have found that it has jump at least two to three teeth on the timing belt what are chances of anything not being bent internally????

I'm no expert, but the fact it stalled and then not started doesn't sound too good?

Almost Nil

Simply based on the fact that you ran the engine until it would run no more I would say you have probably bent all the valves...

Pull the front plugs, put some gladwrap over the holes, turn the engine by hand. If the glad wrap doesn't get sucked down or puffs up, that cylinder has a bent valve or two. Repeat for rear bank once the manifold is off.

Just an idea - haven't tried this myself. IF it works lol it will give you an idea of how many bent valves you have.

if it has skipped 2 or 3 teeth, which cam has skipped? has it advanced or retarded the cam?

2 - 3 teeth doesn't sound like much, maybe not enough to cause interference. i think madmagna will know the answer to this.

did you line the crank shaft up as well? (the mark is on the harmonic balancer)

yes lined them all up im going to do a compression test in the morning as soon as i can get the bottom cover off and retime the belt. If all else fails then i might just wreck it out and buy something newer

. . . . i might just wreck it out and buy something newer . . . . .

. . . . and keep an eye on the ancillary belts in future.

if it has only skipped 2/3 teeth i think it will be fine.

I feel your pain.. I had the same thing happen at MM08 in Canberra. All started with Power Steer belt breaking and catch timing covers and smashed them. Plastic threw timing belt out and then no more magna..

We all remember this famous pic..:( Thats was my Big NA Motor. Thats the reason we went silly forced induction.:)

Guess I must have been really lucky as none of these things happened to myn the belt was still good so re-timed it and replace both both belts with new ones and compression test perfect and started and drove like nothing had happened at all.. I have made a note to my self to check these belts at least every six months cause next time might not be so lucky, I would like to thank those who put good and bad thoughts in my head other wise I would not have known what to expect
