View Full Version : gear changing clicks/knocks?

with some spirited driving in the magana the other day i discovered a slight click (knock, if you will) when the gears are changed using the tiptronic feature.
click happens when changing from a high gear to a low gear, pretty much when revs have to kick up and when pressing the accelerator after it's put into reverse from neutral.
so far there has been no effect on performance.
just wondering if anyone knows of such and issue or has had a similar one and what they can recommend or know needs to be done.

Sounds like you might treating the box a bit harshly. Take it easy with these unless you want to be replacing them often.

Generally the boxes change smoothly when in drive mode but in tiptronic changes can be a bit rough. I'd assume this is because you're likely changing/dropping gears at much higher revs. The jerk when changing from Reverse to Neutral is not good. When was the last time the gearbox oil was changed? It may be worth doing a full flush with genuine mitsu oil and see it goes. You'd be surprised what a difference it can make.

in drive mode there is no knocks when it changes gears, so i'm guessing it may just be me being harsh with the tiptronic.
there isn't a jerk when going into reverse, more of just a slight knock noise, similar to that in a manual car when a gear is changed while the car is off, just not as loud or as obvious.
will have a look at the engine mounts soon.
what's the average price of trans. fluid flush and what's the best brand of fluid?

Good to hear there isn't a jerk but the noise is still not a good thing. Strange that it only happens when going in reverse. This may sound silly have you inspected the shifter mechanism? Maybe there's a bit of dirt in there? Where does the "click" come from?

Average price for the transmission flush is around $200-250 from Mitsu. It can be done yourself but does take a bit of time and patience. Make sure you follow the manual or do a good search here on AMC on how to do it and always use Mitsubishi genuine oil. These gearboxes are prone to failure so proper maintenance is important. If you're really concerned then install a transmission cooler. It seems that those with tranny coolers tend to last longer.

no jerk, unless you consider the usual little movement when going into driver/reverse a jerk...
no dirt in the shifter mechanism, but it was worth a shot.
sound appears to be coming from the left side around the passenger area.

might see what i can or who can do he fluid change sometime this week.
