View Full Version : Cruise Control - Am I doing it wrong?

Hi everyone,
I tried using cruise control the other day, but it didn't kick in. I turned it on using the outside button, and the light came on the dash, but when I tried to engage it (by pressing the stalk downwards) nothing happened and when I let off the gas the car just began to slow down.
Not that I expected anything to happen, but pressing the stalk upward didn't do anything either, nor did holding the stalk in either direction.
Am I doing something wrong or is it broken? I've driven numerous cars with a similar style system and never seen this before...
Thanks!

You have to hold the stalk down till it engages.... you must also be maintaining the speed as I found sometimes it can be tempremental. I suggest you just try again. You'll find sometimes a flick is sufficient and other times you need to hold it down for longer.
Mine engages with a flick even when still gently accellerating. Check the vacuum line from the vacuum pump next to the windscreen washer reservoir - it goes from there to the actuator on the throttle body. There will also be a relay and fuse (somewhere).

Check the fuse. I think its in the engine bay, but might be under the steering wheel. The cruise is a pretty good module, I don't see it failing. Mine won't cruise when it is under 80k though. Might be made like that.

I haven't had any of the problems mentioned, mine will enter cruise regardless of the acceleration (I can actually be flooring it out of a corner and as soon as I'm about to hit 60 flick it down and let off the accelerator and it sits on 60), and I believe cruise control works at about 50 and above. I don't think it works on 40 and I know it works on 60, I'm fairly sure it works on 50 but not 100%.
But then again I drove the car for about 2 months before I realised that it actually remembers your speed and you can flick it up and it will accelerate itself to the speed you were last on before you braked. I literally was amazed when it did that, I thought it was failing and just jamming the accelerator on. I thought the up direction was just so you could hold it up to make it go up when the speed limit changed from 60-70 for instance.
I drive with cruise too much. It's an amazing luxury and the Mitsi one seems to be bulletproof.

Works from 40kmh onwards and if it is not coming on you may have a leaking vac tube, defective vac diaphram on the TB, broken vac pump or a faulty stalk, vac pump system is the most likely culprit
The fact that light is coming on indicates that the cruise ECU is still functioning

I couldn't find the fuse for the cruise control, anyone know where it is located? The manual doesn't list it and neither of the fuse boxes have icons or text that would insinuate cruise control fuse.
I also had a quick gander around the hoses near the throttle body... none were disconnected but I am not that well versed in cars that I would even think about trying to disconnect or follow one of them to see if its connected correctly.
All of our brake lights work as well, so I am stumped...
