View Full Version : The analog fuel indicator doesn't indicate correctly

HI guys,

If anyone had this problem before and if they fixed it somehow.

My fuel indicator (analog one) on my TJ 2003 Series 2 advance behaves like this:
1. If I fill up the tank with 60 liters (full) the fuel indicator goes all the way up (as expected). However, after driving 20-30 it starts to go down as if I am running out of fuel, until after 45 minutes of driving goes all the way down as if the tank is completely empty.

So I have to guide myself using the electronic one ( which only shows how much fuel I ran through, not how much fuel is left).

Please let me know if I can fix it myself.

Thank you,
Mike

It'll be your fuel sender unit which is faulty. From memory they're only $70-80 but don't quote me on it, fitting can be done yourself, might be worth waiting for someone with experience actually changing one over to comment though.

Yep mate, I have this EXACT issue right now in my GTV. It will go full when you fill the tank and then actually drop by itself regardless of fuel usage, my ladyfriend and I watched it drop from half a tank wavering up and down, gradually moving down until it was below E, and that was with the ignition off lol. It is definitely your fuel sender, somewhat of a common issue. You will also notice your range will jump from shitloads (Like 400km to go on my car) to showing the dashes all of a sudden because it detects the fuel light is on.

Contacted my dealer in SA, I was quoted $90something for the part, $120ish fitted. I'm just gonna pay them to do it to save myself the hassle. You can do this yourself however it is a bit dirty and tricky and you need the tank to be close to empty if you don't want fuel over yourself. Also probably open the fuel cap before you do it to release pressure in the tank. Use the search feature on this forum and there will be write up on what you need to do and where, but this is what you're looking for below the rear seat to give you an idea:

Thanks a heaps guys! I'll definitely try this when my tank will be close to empty. I can't really do worse than it is right now. Even if I stuff up. :)

I've actually called Mitsubishi Col Crawford and it costs 140 AUD.

Hopefully I will find one on Ebay.

If you guys have one second hand, I would be more than happy to buy.

Cheers,
Mike

I think they may have quoted you a price inclusive of labour to install.
