Hi guys,
I have a Magna TJ Series 2 Advance 2003. It has airconditioning, but it's the manual control one.
Can I replace it with this one?

Is it a job I can do myself? Or it's pretty nasty? Do I need anything else except the control unit? Any sensors or anything like that?

The unit has an outside temperature sensor I assume you'd need to fit, but the actual cabin temperature sensor is inside it. If the car has pre-existing loom for it, it could be relatively plug and play but somehow I doubt it. Could be wrong though! Key it into the search box on top right, I'm sure it's been discussed before.

Climate Control conversion's are a little more in depth than just whacking the control unit in.
If you contact Mal from Mits-Fix, he may have a Climate Control pack available for you, which will include most of the bits you require.

Thats the old thread from a LONG time ago.. Where he was selling a full set.
He MAY be able to organise a set for you.. he MAY not.
Cant hurt to ask.

Yeap, sounds like a fun thing to do. I'll give it a try.

Are you sure you have a 2003 TJ series 2 Advance? I'm dead certain that all TJS2 Advance models came with Climate control as standard. Maybe you have an exec or a TJ Series 1 ?
This has been discussed before over and over, so a good search will go a long way.
Anyway to answer your question: No. You cannot just fit up the CC unit. lol If only it was that easy!!! The manual knobs control everything via wire cables. The CC unit uses servo's which are connected electronically and there's no wiring in the standard loom's to power the unit, servo, plus all the sensors.
I've done the conversion before and its quite a time consuming job. Does require a bit of skill with being able to solder and you do need a good socket with various extender bars.
Basically you need the following parts - Mal used to sell this in a complete ready-to-use kit. Contact him to see if he still has them. Otherwise get down to your local wreckers.
The parts you need are:
- Climate control unit + facia (I have a spare facia if need one)
- If you don't have a double din unit then you'll need the Single din storage compartment as the Climate control ones are different from the normal ones.
- Breather tube. & heater box mount. Connects to CC unit.
- TJS2/KJS2 dash & instrument loom
- 3x servo's (actuators) located behind the dash. One is on the lhs blower assembly, and the other two are located on the central heating assembly.
- Solar (sunlight) sensor - located on the top of the dash between the window vents
- Outside temp sensor (apparently not necessary but tells outside temp)
- Water temp sensor (found under the heater assembly)
- Fan speed thermistor. [aka Fan relay & controller]. Attached to the "Cooler unit" aka Heater core plastic surround.
So in order to do the conversion you need to:
- Remove the dash completely.
- Fit the new loom.
- Bypass the heater core thermostat (you wire directly to the wire that's connected sensor inside the heater core - yellow & black cable).
- Fit up the three servo's and shafts to the appropriate levers.
- Insert water temp sensor
- Connect the Interior cabin sensor
- Replace fan speed thermistor.
- Connect in CC unit and breather tube w/mount on end.
- Connect everything back - ensure there are no open connections and it should work. It's worth testing the system before you put the dash back in.
And that's it. If you plan to do it yourself then allocate at least 2-3 days to do it. It may sound fairly simple but it does require a fair amount of work. Taking out a dash is time consuming and if you're doing it for the first time then you will be slow. Make sure you make markings of every bolt where it goes and all keep all the pieces together.

What is behind the little vent holes on the auto/temperature knob then? I thought this was located inside the unit there.

The cabin temp sensor is located in vent holes near the temperature knob, I think he is referring to the sun light sensor.

:( Man, no longer seems that simple. You are right, taking the entire dash out is a pain. I was once helping someone to take the dash out for a different car and it was hell on earth. Ended up spending 10 bloody hours.
I'll leave it the way it is. I definitely don't have the skills to do all that. Thanks a heaps for taking the time to respond with a nice detailed answer.
Cheers,
Mike

Correct. In the TL/TW models these are external - located behind those on the lhs of the centre console.

Yes - correct. Apologies - I got mixed up. Now corrected.
