hey guys,
considering getting a tranny cooler for my auto... was wondering what it really involves. i gather u would have to fit some sort of radiator at the front of the car ?? how much are they generally and how easy is it to obtain and fit one?
any comments appreciated.

I installed a tranny cooler not long ago, was fairly easy to do. It was a kit I purchased from RPW for $105 or there abouts. The cooler I got is one that works in-line with the factory setup, that is where the fluid runs through the bottom section of the radiator. Instructions are included with this kit, as they are with most kits, install is pretty easy, the hardest part is finding the best place to mount the cooler in regards to air flow and so that it is easy to feed the required hoses through.
If your looking for a cheaper alternative, try second hand units, there always seems to be a few on ebay, or even try a few local transmission shops, they'll be able to help you out. Basically all you need is the cooler itself, a couple of meters of transmission hose and hose clamps, and something to hold the cooler in place, a few ppl on AM have simply used cable ties to hold the cooler in place myself included, it all depends on the size of the unit though.

I got a quote from a couple of tranny places for a tranny cooler. The first said they'r make custom brackets to mount it, the second said they'd zip tie it place. In fact mitsis said they'd buy one from Repco and zip tie in place! I found that very hard to believe.

Make a custom bracket if you can.
I have a auto tranny cooler being used as a power steering cooler, as the intercooler took up the rudimentary cooler spot. I fitted it behind the driverside fog lamp area.
I wouldn't want to lose power steering due to the cooler coming lose, so made a custom bracket, I am sure you wouldn't want to lose tranny fluid even more!! :)
Zip ties are great, but after a coupla years they tend to harden, and will eventually break. If you are going to zip tie ... go the biggest you can get, they will last the longest.

You could probly even just use some tie wire to hold the cooler in place, the cooler doesn't exactly get that hot, not hot enough to affect tie wire, and unlike plastic cable ties, the tie wire will last for years.

Anyone got photos?
This is something I'll be looking at getting too.
Sorry for the hijack, reckon someone could install a guage to monitor temperature of the transmission fluid? Autometer make transmission temp guages? It seems like a cheap mod at only 150 for the unit itself...
