hey guys,

I have a 2003 VR-X Magna TL, I am looking to install my sub i got here but im not 100% sure on how to do it, so i'm kinda after a guide or a rough guide on how to hook it up, it will be sitting in the back & as far as i'm aware the cables need to run through to the front (thats why i need a guide of some sort :P)

What stereo have you got?
What sub / amp are you running?
What cables do you have to do the install?

First of all, Welcome to AMC!

Second of all, is this your first mod?
Do you already have your sound system parts ready to be installed or are you asking what you need to get.
What is your budget?
What parts do you already have?

I could ask many questions, but let's start with the basics and work from there.

If you're in Brisbane, drop me a PM, I show you the basics, I know my way around a TL audiowise.....

I got the sub off my brother from his old magna he had years ago (similar model to mine by the outside looks) so i'm just looking to hook that up into my system.

I'm fairly sure that didn't actually answer any of the above questions.

Do you have just the sub or did he give you cables as well?
You need power cable, ground cable, fuse, rca cable and speaker wire at minimum, do you have all of that?

the 2 red and white plugs at the back of your head unit means you can plug in 2 rca cables, but you will only need one red and one white for your sub running off a mono block amp set up.

I would recommend you watch this video first to get a brief idea on how to install a sub and go from there.
If someone near your area that can help you, that would be best as it will take time to explain a few things and help with the install.

you dont need an amp, but it would be of extremely good use if you did use an amp.

whats the main benefit to having an amp in there / is it easy to install later on or would u have to connect it up to the battery as well.

the amp, simply just gives more power to the sub to make it louder, otherwise, without one, its simply just there for looks and small sound.

its rather easy to install, just a matter of running a power wire through the engine bay, a set of rcas and remote wire from the headunit and finding a grounding point for the amp.

it might even be worth getting someone else to install it if you arnt keen on doing it.

well i like learning new stuff, so i'll give it a try first and see how i go. I may just hook up the sub for now to see how it is and if i don't like it then i'll get an amp put in.

its rather easy, just make sure you have a few spare fuses and a suitable ground. as well as disconnecting the battery. all obvious but even those with a lot of experiance still forget

Headunits put out, say, 10w RMS of power. Technically speaking, you could run a sub off a headunit - after all, it's one big speaker. Practically speaking, you can't - subs need much more than that. So in other words, you must have an amplifier to power a sub.

Amplifiers require you to run a fused power wire from your battery to the amp; a ground wire from the amp to a metal ground on the chassis; and remote and RCA wires run from the headunit to the amp. The sub is then connected to the amp by regular speaker wire.

Some pioneer head units allow you to run a small woofer of a h/unit, by bridging the rear channels.
The sony subs dont take a lot to get moving, but I'd revommend 150 watts rms, not peak, to make it worth putting in.
If youre in brisbane, I have loads of time on my hands at the moment....

I'm installing the audio system atm, the wiring to go into my unit is a bit different to this guide that i have here, my car is a magna 2003 VR-X TL model, does anyone know of a guide to suit this car, my guide has different coloured wires to mine. (In reference, i'm going by http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/Mitsubishi-Wiring.asp - Trying to find another wiring picture ATM)

Hey man, where in QLD are ya? It's quite easy to get in touch with one of us and get a quick walkthrough of the install process. It's not entirely difficult, and if this is your first experience with car audio, you can waste a lot of money on unneeded parts.

Take for instance the fact you need an amp. Don't waste money on a Rockford or an Alpine unless you really plan to lay out some money on your sound system. Get a cheap Sony or Pioneer Monoblock.

I got it the new audio system installed but i'm missing some options on the dash, like how u view ur total K's done and such, its just blinking 5 and when u press mode to switch between them it only goes between the 5 and two upsidedown 7's. Any ideas on that?

Its S for sedan and W for wagon, you need to let the ECU know what size tank you have, I think the next option is 3.5 litre or 3.0 litre, obviously its the 3.5......
Its a long press on the cruise control button to confirm......When you are done, you have just finished the Reset the ECU setup.....

yeah i worked it out, reseting it fixed it (how i didnt do that first up i do not know haha)
