Hi All,
Hoping someone can help me... I recently had an incident whereby the door on my magna was bent back (past 90 degrees), which damaged the hinge, manual window mechanism, and god knows what else. So I've sourced a new door from a breakers which is in pretty good nick, apart from the fact it is gold/silver, and the rest of the car is dark green.
I've phoned around a few panel beaters, and they are quoting at around the $400 mark to respray the door. I've told them I'm not bothered about having the door exactly match the rest of the car, as long as it's roughly the same colour.
Could someone let me know if this is a reasonable price? Or should I be able to get it done cheaper. If I can't find a cheaper way of doing it I'm probably going to look at doing it myself...
Cheers
Adam
Sounds about right. approx $200 per flat section.

"roughly the same colour" and "exactly the same colour" will cost the same, so why not go for a good match?
You might want to hang the door onto the car first, to see if the bodywork hasn't bent out of shape.

Sounds like a good deal to me....

If an exact match isn't a biggie, why not grab a couple of rattle cans and give it a go.
Clean and rub the panel down with a light grit paper. Keep the can an even distance from the panel and smooth passes. Don't go too close or you'll get runs. let it dry a bit before adding subsequent coats.
But that's the beauty of paint if it's crap you can rub it back and try again.
If you have a go and are really unhappy, then it'll cost the same to get a pro to do it an dall you've lost is the cost of the cans and some time.

Don't do this if you actually want the door to look reasonable and for the paint not to crack up in two months.
Instead - watch some of this videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/customspraymods?feature=g-user-bul - He's name is Dave and his channel is called "CustomSprayMods". He's a DIY backyard guy so all his advice is made for DIY starters. He actually one video where he resprays a door to compare 2-pack (2K) to Acrylic paint

Obviously buying the gear will be expensive so maybe ask around in the ACT section of this forum if anyone would lend you an air compressor for a case of beer or something. Don't be afraid to jump on some other forums as well.
I'd be looking into spraying the door with acrylic instead of 2pac. You can legally do it at home and its far more forgiving than 2K.
I'd pay the $400 and be done with it.

I agree. It's not worth your while to buy the equipment and practise the skills needed for a single door. Now if you wanted to paint a whole car and do a colour change, that would be different.
Perhaps the OP knows a friendly neighbour who has the equipment and skills to do a simple door job?
