View Full Version : A/C Dial not selecting lowest 2 fan speeds

On my TH 3rd gen magna, the fan does not run when the fan speed select dial is set to the 2 lowest speeds, it then blows really hard when the 3rd speed is selected, it is the lowest I can get it.
I was wondering if anyone had seen this before and whether the problem is likely to be in the dial itself, or in a relay or fuse somewhere?
Thanks

Resistor pack has had it. Unsure of location on a third gen.

Have a look at the fan housing under the dash. If you see an electrical connection attached to what looks like a little trapdoor held in by a couple of screws, that's probably it. Resistors get hot and sit in the airflow of the fan.
Then again I could be completely wrong . . . . can't look at the manual at the moment.

Tried looking at the workshop manual and couldnt find anything about it, but I'm probably not using the right search terms,
The 'fan housing under the dash', what side of the car is that on?
Thanks

Big black box. Turn the fan on and just look for the source of the noise and vibration. lol Passenger side, next to glove box.
If I could get to my manual, I'd be looking for an exploded diagram of the behind-the-dashboard bits.

behind the glovebox. remove the 4 black screws in the top of the glovebox, and remove the bottom kick panel and the two gold screws below it. then remove the glove box to find the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) unit.
Look for the fan box directly ahead of the glove box. You should be able to see the resistor block (with the electrical connection) directly from underneath. Two phillips head screws and it is out. it is a bank of resistors which reduce the voltage applied to the fan and hence slow the fan down. The resistors are progressively shorted out until you have full voltage applied to the fan motor = full speed.
