View Full Version : Help with Sub choice
Hey guys,
My old sub that was a freebie just died and so I'm in the market for a new one. I'm more aimed at a SQ sub but it obviously needs to have a bit of grunt to it too. It will be going in my wagon in a custom box, the largest I can fit is around 1.5cuft.
I have found a Diamond Audio M612-D2 12" subwoofer for $200 in pristine condition. I have an SSL C5000.1 amp which was also free with the old sub. The amp is pretty poor but it mostly does te job for the time being.
Do you reckon it's a good buy? Is the sub any good? Is the sub/amp combo going to be fine?
You guys are the experts so any feedback is helpful.
Thanks,
Samm

Your sub is only as good as your amp. I would look at replacing that first

The sub/amp combo will work, Diamond Audio make some good products and for $200 its hard to go wrong. The SSL amp im guessing without doing a Google search would be a Sound Storm Laboratories amp? You will at least want an amp that puts out similar if not more power than the sub, now what does this amp put out and at what Ohm?
If it is a true SSL amp than for arguments sake I would halve the rated power because Sound Storm along with Boss Audio manufacture cheap gear that can be passed off a ridiculous prices and most of the time especially from my experience they overrate their figures.
For about the same price as the sub you can get an amp that will put out about 300-400wrms @4ohm which would be a good start.

Yeah I would do that, however what's the point of having an amp but no sub?

Yes it is a Sound Storm Labs amp. It claims it is 2200W @ 4ohm so I should expect at the max half that. Lucky I didn't pay for it then!
As I said in my first post, I will be upgrading eventually but for now I just need a sub because the speakers are on HPF and I cbf changing them atm.
Thanks for the input
