How much did/do these cost from Mitsubishi? Are they still available? Were they an Aussie option or JDM/USDM only? Reason I asked is I just bit the bullet and bought a set from Japan second hand. I'd like to know how much they're worth before I reveal how much I paid :P

About $160 if I recall correctly. They were available from MMAL a couple of years ago, not so sure about now.

I bought and sold a set in Very good condition for $50.00, a second hand set needs a new adhesive...
I hated the things, wind noise, they should be called a rain guide, not a rain guard.

Same, I have had some in the past and they just whistle!

Ahh bummer. My understanding was they weren't available from MMAL any more so I snapped a set for $200 shipped from an equiv Diamante. Oh well!

I don't have a issue with mine, been quite happy with them :D
Agree with the "rain guide" though.

Well you just got stooged! Those $200 rain whistles will put you to the top of the award list along with your boot liner carpet.

The price I got on the boot liner was actually very good thanks. EDIT: But if you have a problem with me, take it to PM.

Ah, I had read they were no longer available new. So I lost about $20 on them versus new, that's a bit of a shame but not a particularly big loss. And yeah I doubt they'll whistle at all though I could see a slight increase in wind noise occurring, I'm not too fussed if that turns out to be the case. Thanks mate for the helpful post and contributing to the thread. :)

On a side note, give me a better pic of your grandpa wing you ordered from Mitsi, SIVART!

Yeah I definately want a set of these for my wagon. I would give a go at either heating up the slight sedan bend and bending it up or just cutting it off just past the drivers window. Would look legnumish :P

my mate Lou , is trying to heat them up first , if that doesnt work its getting trimmed

I would really like to see a wagon with them

Those carbon wings are not available, I ahve one used one here for a sedan, nothing was ever avail for the wagon though.

Pity those trims were not avail for a wagon either but I guess would look pretty odd on a wagon with them ending at the back doors lol

Bump because these are a ****ing nightmare to fit :(

Mine don't have the adhesive which means they're liable to whistle until I find a suitable replacement (I assume all this whistling talk is because they're meant to have an adhesive strip to seal them to the body, mine is worn but you can see it used to have one) but I can't even get the ****ing things on with only the clips, they just don't go in. :(

SIVART, help! :(

ah yeah, i bought myself a set (used) about a year ago... still not fitted to my car coz i have no idea how to fit them lol

they're currently in the "to-do later" bin along with my 380 washer nozzles..

Jakeys
16-04-2012, 04:37 PM
I think I know HOW to fit them I just can't DO it. I can get maybe one or two of the clips in (I think they fit in a tiny gap between the chrome window trim and the rubber trim for the windows which has a hard plastic ridge exactly the width/depth of the clips) but the others I just can't get them to clip in there. With persistence and luck I could probably do it (Ran out of daylight) but the problem is, they're designed to have the adhesive strip as well and considering how much trial and error there is in getting the damn things in, it's either impossible to readhere them or mine are dodgy or I'm not doing it right. :(

They do look great on the car (I can sort of half fit them enough to have them on for a visual idea) but it's a pain to say the least. hojo, how's the adhesive on yours?

rodpolky
16-04-2012, 05:00 PM
Well I purchased a second set from North East Mitsubishi the other week and they are easy as to fit. I dont understand why you had to go ex Japan when they are ex Sydney for under $200

Jakeys
16-04-2012, 05:08 PM
Yeah I mistakenly thought they were no longer available, buggered that one up good as we established. Took a gamble and you can't win them all unfortunately.
What was the part number? I may just bite the bullet and buy new.

i have a general idea on how they sit (tried fitting, and got a couple clips in..), but after a while i just got lazy and left them off

nah the adhesive has gone to buggery... might just get some 3M double sided tape, should sort it out- 3M products always works!

double sided tape
availavle in regular and as a thin double sided foam
thin black foam type is probably the best bet, try stratco or mitre10 etc
look for one that says its automotive and doesn't hold water or it could promote rust
clean car, not waxed.

you're in Adelaide, go to Protec, Crash Supplies or the like, ask them for a 3M double sided tape. Don't get double sided tape for a car from a hardware store :)

Updates on this ladies and gentlemen, I was actually correct, as was Pickles. Rainguard ARE obsolete. For those interested, the part number was MZ562626.
So I will go ahead with restoring these as I don't have a choice really :P

rodpolky
24-04-2012, 04:53 PM
if you are buying for sedan they are NOT obselete I can assure you of that. They are obselete for the wagon, why they are different? I purchased a genuine set two weeks ago for my KH

Jakeys
24-04-2012, 05:36 PM
Can you supply an alternate part number then from your receipt? I provided the part number listed on my sedan rainguard (Without mentioning what the part was) and the e-mail response from the dealer was that the rainguard kit is obsoleted. This was Elizabeth Mitsubishi, who have been able to order me several parts now both in Aus and in Japan. I would rather buy new than bother with this existing kit if I can, but as far as I have heard from CAMS the rainguards I have are definitely obsolete. I am not aware of a second sedan set so the part number you used would be most useful.

rodpolky

Pretty ordinary on their behalf. Whoever you where dealing with needs to be slapped. I walked into NE mitsubishi and asked for a set, they were in ex Sydney the next day for pick up $175ish. Would have to find the reciept but any parts interpreter that has half a brain should be able to work it out mate, that's what they #%!@% get paid to do!

Jakeys
24-04-2012, 06:03 PM
Alright well cheers for the advice mate, they've been pretty good by me so far. Curious though because when I gave him the part number off the rainguard without telling him what it was, he came back and said "rainguard kit is obsolete sorry" so he did locate the part in CAMS at least to know it was from my rainguards. And they've found some other difficult shit for me, including some parts which actually had new part numbers. Maybe that is the case here... :S

If you could find the receipt that'd be much appreciated.

rodpolky
24-04-2012, 06:31 PM
The part description is weathershield kit LH & RH. $176.65 inc GST but once I find the reciept will post p/n. If your part guy doesnt believe you I will be happy to do his job for him.

Part ex Sydney in stock

Jakeys
24-04-2012, 06:45 PM
Thank you mate, I will follow this up Thursday. He specifically said "rainguard" so seems it may be listed under two part numbers or something.

SIVART
25-04-2012, 05:06 AM

i dont know about those ones

but a preformance store in my state says he can get me aftermarket weathershields

would these be the same???

Jakeys

I'd rather stick to the OEM ones I have than get new aftermarket.

johnvirus_01

well i was thinking of gettin weathershields as i use my car regularly

johnvirus_01
26-04-2012, 01:57 PM
also if i tried that part number

would these fit my TF?

Jakeys
26-04-2012, 01:59 PM
Yes, but the part number listed here is obsolete, so there is no point using it. Also, just to be clear these are quite close to useless. They are a cosmetic upgrade mainly, they don't reduce wind noise (Though in my experience they don't increase it either) and they don't allow you to have your windows down any more than a crack in rain. Marginally useful but in my opinion rather cool looking.

I'd be interested in seeing your aftermarket ones, as universal ones are unlikely to fit our third gens. They have a very specific clip and adhesive system and shape to match, and I didn't think any aftermarket weathershields were made for third gens.

johnvirus_01
26-04-2012, 02:07 PM
will go and see how they look

if i can get some to fit your KJ, would you be interested?

Maybe but I'd really need to see them and confirm OEM is no longer available.

Jakey, the part number listed above is CORRECT AND IN STOCK. Use a different dealer. I am confirming this for you that OEM IS Available. Rod

Been a while and multiple dealers telling me this part is obsolete and not at all available anywhere, even overseas, until I eventually did manage to track down what was supposedly the last new OEM set in some warehouse in Sydney? I don't really trust them now heh since supposedly there was none left but I do have, in my hands, brand new OEM rainguards, which cost me $175, which means that yes the ones I bought on ebay were a definite waste of money. You can't win them all, sometimes buying second hand parts online doesn't work out!

They come disassembled with like a booklet of instructions, which is perfect and explains why my existing ones were so frustrating to fit. Also the adhesive would seal them to the car which would prevent whistling/noise, not that I get any on the existing unadhered set. In any case, seems I owe rodpolky a beer as I would have given up the search without him insisting they're still available.

Who were you dealing with. As far as I'm concerned this thread is a total saga that just did not need to be one. I rang up yesterday to enquire about another set for my vr-x and yep no probs can get a set ex Sydney whenever you want next day delivery.

When you fit them make sure that you fit the two clips in the package (seperated by themselves) are fitted one on each side closest to your side mirrors. The rest of the clips are of different design and are fitted in sequence as per the drawing toward the rear of the vehicle. Use LOTS of primer. Follow this to avoid changing clips around. Once you pop in the black plastic circle clips they are very difficult to remove without breaking them

a few years back i went to my local mitsu spare parts and asked them about the slim-line weather shields (.. or what you're all calling rainguards), they said to me it's no longer being made and there's none in stock... Jakey, can you tell me where in Sydney those came from?? or the dealer you spoke to? i might have to get you to liaise between them and me so i can get my hands on a set of brand new weather shields!

Jakeys
01-05-2012, 11:18 PM
hojo, find out rodpolky's dealer (I'd like to know who they are as well) as obviously the dealers I've spoken to in SA are being fed bullshit and I can't help you. North East Mitsubishi here in SA are who sourced me my set but they said that it might not even be there and if it was, it would be the last set. Their stock system would now read zero like all the other dealers in SA I've spoken to. For reference, I have quoted the correct part number (The part number I provided from my used set SIVART provided for his, and rodpolky confirmed) to the following dealers, all who assure me there are none left:

Elizabeth Mitsubishi
Portside Mitsubishi
North East Mitsubishi (Said there was maybe one left maximum, and I bought that one.)
One other one I can't remember the location of now, I just cold called while I was at work.

For what it is worth and sorry it it off topic a bit.., but it might explain a little why the issues with mitsi parts occur!!

I just bought a Grandpa wing from Perth mitsi, I tracked it down using the correct part number for the last three months. Perseverance with local boys was worth it, but they explained that as the part was now considered obsolete, their system of tracking these older parts was difficult and required someone with the knowledge from the day. Then of course, if the part is in W.A. or Q/Land, forget Mitsubishi getting it for you. They will hit you up with massive freight prices as a part of their transport policy that is in place now. NSW and VIC are ok, but the others are definitely out!!! I am just going to go to Perth and bring mine home and have a holiday at the same time ;), daughter has already picked it up YAY!!
