View Full Version : Wiring parabolics to mimic standard hi/lo beam?

Hey guys. Despite my engine issues (see other thread) I'm also working to wire my parabolics so that they run as per normal on low beam, but when they are switched to high beam, the low beam bulbs switch off, providing further illumination without your eyes being dazzled by brighter, closer reflection off the road right in front of you.
If you're not following me, the factory Magna third gen headlights have H4 bulbs which have two filiments. One is active to give the low beam light, but when you put your high beams on, the other filiment activates, along with the H1 globe. I'm essentially trying to mimic this, as I find that when night driving with high beams on, the low beams just sit there and light up the immediate road.
Ground the solid red wire on the H7 plug (low beam).

No sorry I don't think I made enough sense. I know thats how the wiring is modified to get them to work, but basically:
instead of
low beam = low beam H7's on, H1's off
high beam = low beam H7's on, H1's on
I want to achieve
low beam = H7's on, H1's off
high beam = H7's off, H1's on
if you catch my drift.

With the pathetic lighting of the parra's I wouldn't do it to my car im just not sure if it will be that easy to do or be worth it in the end

This is what occurs when you do not do the wiring modification. iirc its illegal as well.

I found that when I didn't do the wiring mod, I had no low beams. High beams worked fine.
Chances are ill do it and immediately reverse it if its crap.

Bumping this. In the mean time I'm using my standard Magna headlights. But I'm curious as to how I can achieve this. It seems fairly simple and no doubt can be done easily.
To re-iterate, Basically with the standard magna headlights, on low beam, you've got the lowbeam filament on and nothing else. On high beam, the high beams are on, and the low beams change to a high beam filament.
With the parabolics, it works slightly different. on low beam, the low beam lights up. On high beam, both low and high beam are on.
basically what I want to achieve is so that on low beam, the low beam bulbs come on. when i click over to high beam, the high beam lights come on, and the low beam bulbs click off. the low beams show too much light on the road and makes it harder to see when night driving with high beams on.

I understand what your doing, but it seems a bit impractical to me.
You would need to add in a secondary relay that when the high beam is on, it turns off the low beam. So, have a relay that works as always open, but closed when the high beam comes on. To do this you would need to do it in the cabin with the wires from the stalk.

Ah, damn. I thought it would be as simple as pulling a bit of trickery with the 3 wire connector for the low beam light and voila, but maybe not. I'll have a look at the wiring diagrams, but I might be out of luck.

This is the strangest thing I have ever seen asked however to be honest, just plug the para's into any std magna without modifying the MAGNA (not verada) harness and this is exactly what will happen with the parras
Personally, the more light on the road the better, thus why I am about to fit Super Oscars to my Pajero .....

You're almost on the money Mal. But I want the low beams to come on on low beam, but off on high beam, but off all the time.

Correct me if I am reading wrong but when you go to high beam you just want the inner high beams to come on and the outer low beams to turn off, is that even legal?

better yet...why would he want to do this?

The idea is simple really. So I can see better at night when driving on highways etc with my high beams on. The way the parra's work, the low beams are always on so there is significant light flood near the vehicle. This causes the eyes to adjust, letting in less light (because of the light on the road) and making what the highbeams light up less visible.
