As promised, some pics of my tp currently and previously, bonnet is off due to having to repaint it, and also the front right guard due to the usual cancer in the bottom near the door, thankfully had a spare guard or 2 on the tn to just chop off that bottom section, tack it on and slap some paint on it...be warned, there are images that may be appauling to some magna owners to see such things done to such a car....such as spoiler, speakers, stereo, graphics etc

Ups - more personalized than when first purchased, interior more attractive, found a spoiler that fitted very well, successfully added stop lights to the spoiler, hooked up amp, speakers, stereo, yet to do roof mounted dvd, fixed the piston issue by taking one out of a tn, cleaned up the whole, slipped in the tn one and its all good now.

Downs - it needs a good clean, the added spoiler means i have to prop the boot up/open with a length of wood, attempted to add a strip of leds to the front bumper but was told it was not legal, messed up making up some boxes to mount the speakers in the boot, the roof lining like all good old cars is slowly falling down, the cover/sleeve for the boss kit is the wrong length, too short, since doing the piston, there's now an oil leak around the top of the motor. tires are the very one and only originals apparently.

good or bads - possibly thinking of changing over to manual, sounds no more or no less like a typical 4 cyl car, considering fixing that with a flared or baffled exhaust tip ( any suggestions would be appreciated ), not sure about the ecu could do with flashing/reprogramming, or replacing.

Yeah have heard its not too hard if you know your way around cars in general, thankfully both myself and my eldest brother and my dad have all had magna's so between us 3 it should be done easy enough. Used to have a sigma too 15 odd years ago, brother thrashed the heck out of it then dumped it up the local bike tracks. Thanks for the heads up to the thread, will check it out. Only thing i dont have really to finish it off is body kit, heard on the grapevine some tp's came with body kits but have yet to ever seen one, might not be looking in the right place though, could find one here.

hi mate and welcome to the land of magnas, mine started out as a reasonable idea for a disposable first car and has ended in the whole car being overhauled and upgraded, most significant is the manual conversion and gen 2 motor.

the conversion is easy as long as you can lift the engine easily. i use a block and tackle but a crain would do the trick in sure. mounting the clutch pedel is easy, just make sure you take a stencil of the mounting hole and the profiles around it and your laughing. then its only a case of punching a hole in the fire wall and mounting the selector. the rest just bolts together. it took me about 10 hours of work alone, so with others it will be a peace of piss. just take your time and make sure to replace the clutch while your there regardless of how it looks (i learnt the hard way).

the second biggest thing ide recommend is finding a decent 2nd gen motor. they are much better in their chain tensioner set up and have better heads with far better rocker rollers. personally i believe the original ecu is the best, far more reliable and simpler then the 2nd gen set up and you wont get much more performance out of aftermarket stuff unless you change the throttle body and air flow meter and stuff anyway IMO as its all fairly restrictive. in saying that with the manual conversion they still go like stink. it will have most commodoors up to vt pritty easy off the line. JUST MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY AND PLENUM. then fix the air leaks and they run like factory. i never even changed the plugs. you can balance a coin on mine after a simple clean up, vacuum leaks are your worst enemy on these cars, although the timing chains arnt too good either. thats where i was lucky enough to score a imported and reconditioned motor that had only done 30k. only found out it was an import when the guy at vic roads told me the engine number had never been registered in a car in Australia. was a tense few seconds when accused me of steeling and re stamping it ..... it also has an M6 or 7 head which didn't seem to come out on Aussie versions as far as i can tell.

i thrash the shit out of my wagon and it still gets amazing fuel economy and never complains. its never stopped (accept when the coil lead jumped off) and im always doing long trips hear and there. once again fuel economy is phenomenal. cost me $16 to go to the city and back through heavy stop start traffic the other day. that was over 140km and about 3 hours of driving all up.

so the car owes me $500 max in parts and its the most reliable, comfortably and economical car out there. the first thing is to get rid of the auto tho, their major let down.
i also stripped the elite electrics and threw them in. that took a full day all up but was well worth it. power windows, automatic climate control, electronic dash, central locking and alarm system. it has everything new cars have accept traction control (not that thats a bad thing) and air bags.

anyway ive babbled on enough. if you want any ideas or have any questions we can all help as out of us we have done it all.

regards jay.

Sounds good thanks for that Jay, pretty sure with the 2 of us we'll get it done in no time, got no crane here but got block and tackle, and engine mount and all the tools, got 2 tn's, my tp, 2 vw fast backs, eh holden, toyota crown, 82 skyline, what remains of a pulsar, and rn85 hilux, so think we have plenty tools by now having bought tool kits for almost each car.

The fuel economy sounds great in yours btw, thankfully most i've spent on mine so far is probably for the vrs piston rings etc, and few small things like the pedals, steering wheel etc alongside that its only cost me time so far but i got plenty of that. But we've never done a conversion that's the only thing, although we're thinking of doing the same with the nimbus, auto>manual.

Can get a 2nd gen motor no worries. is about 20 older magna's down the wreckers, tn's tm's tp's etc sedans and wagons. Just waiting on their next free parts day, pay $55 to enter, and walk out with how ever much stuff you can carry providing is only one of each item lol. Am not a friend of timing chains, we done one not so long back in the nimbus, it made one hell of a mess, still picking up shrapnel off the ground, new guides, gaskets, water pump, now something fuel wise is playing up, cant work out where why or what.

But anyways will be starting on the conversion within a few weeks hopefully, then get back to the less important things such as its cosmetics. got a few parts out of another tp such as power window motors door trims with the power controls, auto shifter, steering wheel with built in radio controls etc, been thinking about putting them in at some stage what blows is they took it and crushed it before i got the motor and box out. A mate just told me the only thing that could make it look any better would be some decals on the hood and sides, mags and a sunroof. but i told him if he can find a magna with a sunroof, go for it. not a single one i've ever seen has had a sunroof. but maybe that's yet another concept too look at. Way its going, it wont be legal to take it out on the streets lol

Yeah seen the rims on your wagon, pretty nice looking, not sure what i'll be doing with mine yet, they're a bit scratched up, and only have the 4 so no spare if i put them on. but yeah could end up using them or could take it up a notch and go for a brand new set. still in decision about it.

All i know really is that i can't get tyres for them up here, kept getting told they are too long in the tooth, companies don't make that size anymore except for some chinese ones which are about a 120 a pop, but i know they're the rims that came with my brothers wagon, and are originally of a tn elite so am told.

Is only the 2 designs that i seen at my local a/b, but, with the 2 designs there was multiple colors, blue red chrome pink etc. actually looking into some white ones, try and stick to blue black white theme for the whole car but so far not much luck. but definitely worth checking them winders out. and also small range of pedal covers such as ones in the pics.

215,45 r17's fit under my guards, its down to the offset i think. i really need to get a wheel alignment so i can put them back on. ill stick a new set of tires on if i have money left over by the time i get my jaguar on the road......dam english cars. lovely car but parts are hard to get and expensive as hell. thats why i love the magna. you con get every single part from the milk bar for about $2.50 lol

lol well said old, and pretty true at that. dad used to say the reason he runs a magna is because they're cheaper, easier to work on, and if somehow you do stuff up along the way you know its no real dilemma getting replacement some parts for less than the cost of a meal from macca's heh well up this way at least.

going tyre/wheel shopping on the weekend, few guys down the city been making me offers for some package deals like all good salesmen lol, just going to do some window shopping for the time being though, dont know what size or style i want yet. some nice sets out there though would look alright
