Finished replacing my head gasket and water pump on my TR 2.6ltr and when I was filling the radiator I noticed a leak. I have a 4-6mm hole in the timing chain cover behind the alternator, I will attach pictures.
From what I can tell, replacing this cover will mean the engine has to come out as there is so much stuff around the area. I was wondering if maybe there is another solution like getting the hole welded or something???
Any help would be great, if I have to pull it out I will but if there is an easier way i would love to hear it. Thanks all :)

I had a TP do the same thing, many years ago. It is possible to change the timing cover whilst engine is still in car, but it is a major PIA.

the worn guides and chain caused the hole
you can patch the hole
but the problem wont go away

Yep, a worn chain will chew away at the timing cover. It can be welded but it needs to come off the car.
This is another reason why the 2.6L Astron wasn't used in later models.
Engine needs to be lifted enough to get the cover off, and give you a good view of the timing chain and guides when you replace them with new ones.

You are right, Sir! Seen the hole before, a long, long time ago, on an old Sigma, patched up with araldite lol. Owner of the car said it was due to corrosion. Either way, better if the cover comes off to be welded.

Hi people.. this describes what happened to my TP just today., small hole behind the alternator and water pouring out of it.. I've only just got the thing and Im trying to get it up to RWC, so I need this like I need a hole in the head
Im no mechanic and the gregory's manual I have for the TP aint the greatest manual in the world.. Im more then willing to get my hands dirty but I need help, advice or simply someone I can trust to take it to for repair
that wont burn a hole in my back pocket
any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated..
Im in Melbourne Vic

welcome to the club john allways good to see another gen1 on the road
quickest way to fix it remove the alt sand the hole and put some metal putty over it
depends on how your timing chian is. if it rattling get a kit and replace the timing cover and timing gear at the same time
here,s a link to timing cover removal

thanks for the quick reply.. it'll have to be the putty for me, like I said I'm no mechanic and removing
the engine is a bit beyond my know how. I'm sure I could take it apart.. but doubt I'd get it back together
as it's meant to be.
Cheers, John.
