Hey guys i'm due for a set of tyres - currently on 215 55 r17 all around.

I only need the 2 front tyres changed, what size can i go in terms of different tyres. I found that 225 or 235 are MUCH cheaper.

Will it drive well with say 225/235 55 ?

Depends on the rim width. 225/50/17 should be fine for 7-7.5 wide, or 235/45/17 for 7.5 plus wide. 235/45/17 are generally considered a bit wide for factory 17x7 Magna alloys... depends on what rims you have fitted.

Edit: 225/50s seem to cost similar to 215/55s, perhaps even a little more depending on make. 235s are always much cheaper... but then there's the size issue if you're running factory alloys.

...and illegal. Apparently the Australian Tyre and Rim Standards Manual states that a 7" rim cannot legally be fitted to a 235 tyre due to its width.

The cheapest I've seen a 225/50R17 is $120 including fitment, and that was a Minerva - not a premium tyre by any stretch, but enough to get you by. Wanlis can be sourced from eBay for around $100ea +shipping.
I've seen a decent set of four second hand Pirelli P7s on eBay for $270+shipping, from Victoria (not sure if theyre still on there though)

My understanding is that there are no states in Australia that will let you drive around on two different width tyres (please correct me if I am wrong), you're better off getting a pair of decent 215 second hand tyres until you can afford a full set of 225 or 235 matching size tyres, or shell out for two new 215s

That's on the same axle, so you can run different widths front and rear but not left to right.

Thanks guys - i'm not really to worried about the extra 30 or 40 bucks per tyre - just thought that i can get wider set for grip on the front ;) Simular to my skyline which has 275 on the back and 235 on the front

Probably gonna some KU31's on the front in the orginal 215s

Hey does anyone have 235/45/ 17 on their magnas??

Got quoted 400 for 2 tyres in the orginal size so want to 4 new ones for around 400 in the larger size.

I have 235/45/17's on my KL GTVi, I dont have any issues with them. They were dramatically cheaper than the 225/55/17's that they replaced.

I do, but I don't like them. I bought my current mags with them on, and beside them being illegal to fit on a 7" wide mag, I find that they pull my car around on the road (though that may be more due to the condition of the tyres).
I'm replacing all four tomorrow, and downsizing to a 225/50R17 for $120ea fitted and balanced (Minerva F107s - by no means a premium tyre, but legal and insurance won't raise an eyebrow)

So its actually illegal to put them on 7" wide wheels???

The 225/50/17 is the std size for the VRX and third gens with the 17" wheels

the 235 is technically illegal but also remember your load ratings as well as often the 235 will not have the correct load rating as well

On my wagon I have gone the other way and used the 215/55/17 from the 380 as the wheels I had from my 380 had brand new Kuhmo on them, this has also made my speedo spot on at the same time.

With tyres, if I can not afford good tyres I park the car because these are one of those things which will come unstuck when you really need them oneday
