View Full Version : rev limiter

Soon I got a retune today.. 264hp with my intercooler at about 80c.. estimated 270-280 with a cold flow happening.. my tuner is begging me to get the rev limiter upped to about 7000, he is confident I'll get 300+ with the increase, as my graph is really starting to ramp up when the limiter cuts.

Now I remember reading stuff about limiter increases a while ago bid can't dig anything up now..

Basically I want to know.. how do stock internals like copping 7k? And how easily is it done?

Many loves :)

Stock internals are fine with 7000 says SKR but i'm not sure about when you add a charger into the equation!

Firstly, that thing is bloody quick. Second thing, I wouldn't dare run 7000 revs on stock internals. I think it would cop it, but for how long I don't know. Probably a matter of weeks or months depending on your right foot.

What's your current limiter?

6700-6800 should be good, not sure how 7000 would do too often.

In my TF 3L it is set to 7200 rpm. Not sure what the 3.5's are set to.

According to the tacho, its cutting at 6200.

So under what driving conditions will a 7,000 rpm limiter be an advantage over a 6,200 rpm limit? Done the maths on relative piston speeds and G forces?

Math? Ppft, higher power output + higher rpm into the next gear = win win IMO.

Mine is set at 7150rpm, haven't had any issues... TH engine (fat rods) with TJ Cams (#6).

Stock limiter for all magnas is 6850rpm.

Interesting.. 6850, my tacho must be way off, either that or it lags .. now for my other question, how does one go about changing it?

Not aloud to post link so google "magna factory ecu tuning", you'll find it.

Cheers.

Other curious thing is a rattly sound up front that just sounds like a heat shield vibrating or something.. but I can't bloody find it!
When I was at the tuner he half jokingly, half seriously said "little end?" To which I got my rage face on.. any know if this kind of noise could possibly be a little end bearing or something drastic?

My Auto ralliart had a 6200rpm limiter and the manual had a 6700rpm limiter.

My limiter hasent changed, I don't drive the car that far up in the rev range

And why would you? A supercharger offers enough grunt from 0rpm to not need to rev its nuts off.

I disagree. if your drag racing, every bit of juice counts. If I can shift at 7k I reckon I could shave 1-2 tenths off my time.

Surely a forced induction build will mean that peak power is much lower than even 6500rpm for a reliable road car? Remember we are NOT talking about a Supra or Skylines. These are magnas that arent designed for it

I've got a fairly linear curve that starts to strongly climb before red line. Sure my mid range is great for day to day driving
. But regardless, its just a given that the extra red line rpm will benefit a drag race.

I'd be worried that your tuner is tuning but doesn't know were the rev limiter is? When is the rattly noise? could be detonation.
We rev are std internal 6G75 IPRA Magnas to 7300 with no probs. I think a 6G74 would rev safely to 7500.
Cheers Dave

I agree. 3 to 4,000 rpm is plenty to keep up with traffic, even in my 1.8L Lancer. But then none of my cars want to pretend they are hairy balled dragsters. lol

The rattle is only at low revs on medium acceleration. its just like a rattly resonance from something like a heat shield or something loose. The tune is still very safely running rich, they had a ping sensor thingy in the exhaust.

Well the actual value is 6793 for all Magna 6G74s, but there's a scale factor involved so it could vary a little about that value. Most tachos will not be particularly accurate unless calibrated (and lag could be an issue as well).

As for changing it, see the thread linked in my sig.

That would be a wideband oxygen sensor, not a knock ("ping") sensor...

When you get your retuned next, your tuner can charge it through the ecu, 7000 should be fine, rev limiters are there for safety if your not worried about engine life you could take it off completely... Lenda use to have no limiter for years, woob nice power figure by the why... Yours is supercharged yeah! What boost did the guy say yours getting 6200?

We measured 5.5psi at the manifold. Running the same blower as Mike, cept I'm running W2A

Man your motor is an animal ;) yep with those supercharger boost more as the revs go up, lenda " mike" is going to but a limiter on 7500, but his engines been balanced... You have to take me for a spin I'm coming up today so time

..GONE..

Have you checked the front flex pipe and the rear exhaust heat shield..?

Two common rattle issues..

I think the engine bottom end will handle fine, my 3l mivec redline is 7400,limiter is about 8200rpm. i know the heads are different and pistons, but the bottom end is the same as other na 6g72. although boost changes things a little. nice number!!!

How long will you be up for man? I'm in Lake Grace this weekend but I'll be back tomorrow arvo, and working in Vic Park on Tues and Wednesday.

I'm pretty happy with my tuner hey, he's doing a quality job at getting good power out of safe tunes!
