hi all i just got myself a 96 te exec for a daily.
im going to be doing the timing belt in the next few weeks but im a little puzzled on which belt is for my car?
ive got the 24 valve, 3.0 litre v6. build month is MAY 96
its the 6g72 going by the eng number and whats on the rego papers.
i keep getting asked which one is it out of the 2 numbers below
6G72-S2 6G72-S4
any easy way to identify this? or will it be a trip to mitsubishi to find out?

Have you got log books? Look for the engine number in that or even better look for the engine number on the engine itself, it should be on the block I believe near the alternator.. but I could be wrong. That and it being a 6G72 24valve 3.0L should be all you need.
Where are you buying the belt? Recommend genuine, in which case mitsu should be able to find the engine number for you no hassle.

S2 is 12 valve and S4 is 16 valve. S is single cam and the 2/4 is number of valves per cylinder.

only books i got, was the owners manual.
hadn't thought to look in it as some generally don't have info like that in it.
looking on the block it appears as 6G72M00****
i was going through a mate that works at repco. as i can get cost price.
i'll give mitsubishi a shot on monday. i dont know when it was last done anyways.
im just going to do a major service on it so its done for the peace of mind, and being my daily. i cant afford for it to stuff up

That's the go, it should serve you well if you keep the services up. I spent $1900 on mine since I bought it 4 months ago (2 oil changes, timing belt, auto flush, coolant, ext belts, new brakes etc) but now it's set for a long time & should be trouble free

You haven't mentioned the number of Km on the car.
If it is close to 200,000 km, people tend to change everything under the cam cover - belt, idlers, hydraulic tensioner, water pump.
If you are doing a lot of work on the car yourself, the cheapest place for parts is rockauto.com. Delivered to your door in about a week.
Belts, plugs, etc. cheap.
Ask the Mitsu dealer for prices and then check rockauto.com

the k's on it are 319500. a nice high k one. vast majority were highway kilometeres.
used to live in morwell\taralgon area before i got it.
it is my intention to do so.. i have never seen the point using old tensioners if its easier to do it all at the same time.
a towtruck costs more in the long run.
i'll be doing the work myself as im going to be going the rockercover gaskets and the leads and plugs. at the same time the belt is done.
i've delt with mitsubishi in the past, i know how they charge
i used to have a 86 tm magna on lpg when i got my p's just over 10 years ago.. so im familiar with the old ones.. just not the newer ones

thankyou very muchly.
i thought it would be the case to find out the correct one. i just wasnt game to lift the covers off as my leads are faily old. and knowing my luck i'd break a few. hence why im getting everything first.

I bought a cam belt kit, belt, two tensioners, hydraulic tensioner, water pump for $229 recently from rockauto.com, just to give you an idea of prices. I've bought platinum plugs and power steering/ AC-alternator belts from them too. Haven't bought plug leads, but will check the price.
EDIT: $20 to $45, depending on make.
Wouldn't hurt to do the tube seals as well.

ended going to bursons to get the timing belt kit.
got the kit what it would of cost me online anyways
im going to see how good the waterpump looks when im under there or get one next pay.
just need a workshop manual now, and either buy or make the tool to adjust the tensioner

Replace the water pump anyway. If you want to have a trouble free car with no servicing worries for a while then just do it. The pump isn't that expensive. Still need to do my belt change. Can't put it off forever.

If you want to save $$ over Mits prices and get some quality parts, most of them being the same brands that are used by Mits, check my store out as well.
The pre tensioner I would only do if there is an issue with it and I would highly reccomment against using an aftermarket pre tensioner. Have seen way too many fail over the years. A failing pre tensioner will cause a cold start rattle, will not require a tow truck

might have to come up and get a waterpump off you in the next day or so.. as im planning on doing it whilst i have no work on.
also anyone know where i can get the tensioner tool? or is it a case of make my own?
