Hi guys, I purchased a 2005 Magna about 6 months ago and I was getting 11.5L per 100 and now I'm lucky to get less than 14's, i drive the car like a grandma so what the?? Why the sudden spike in fuel consumption???? then my air conditioner started to play up, when I first turn it on it makes a horrible clunking noise and when I drive with the air conditioner on I get squeaks from the engine bay, if I kick down the pedal and release quickly, it also squeaks but only when the a/c is on. Has this happened to anyone else?

Squeeling is more than likely a loose belt.. Take it to a local mechanic and get them to tension them again or if you're handy, a little DIY job for ya.

The clunk when the air con switches on is the compressor.. It's happened in the last few Magnas I've had, still happens in my Verada.

If the aircon and the high fuel usage are linked it could be the compressor bearing binding. Makes it hard for your engine and the belt to turn the aircon pulley causing drag. this will cause both fuel usage and belt slip/squeal

Cant hurt to check O2 Sensor too.. It's a straight forward process.

Knock a few things off the list.

Interesting - I have terrible fuel economy and the belt squeak. I wonder if it's a binding issue in the belts or ac pulley/bearings... Must get my mechanic to look at this as saving 4L/100km would be nice.

Well if it's an awd don't expect it to be too great. A fwd auto around town should get about 11.5, awd add +2

Yeah it's a normal fwd auto with 140,000kms. My old TJ with 170,000 gets 11.9L lol so I'm spewin'!

Loose A/C belt perhaps? This happens in both my cars I just haven't gotten around to getting them tightened. My economy is still good though (as low as 6.8L/100km on highway). Maybe try throttle body clean & running 98 octane fuel for a couple of tanks. Also has fuel filter been changed?

Sorry to rehash this one but, my 2000 TJ makes the horrible clunking noise when the aircon first starts up but also whilst driving with it on... is this because the compressor stops and starts during normal operation, or is this a problem? Wouldnt bother me so much except when it clunks and im at the lights, it feels like the brakes slip... any advice? Could this have anything to do with the fan coming on?

Cheers all
