View Full Version : manual tranny oil
HI,
I am about to replace my gearbox oil. (105,000km Service) And was wondering what type of oil most of have put in your car if you have replaced it?
What difference did it make? any improvements?
I know that some people (including me) find it is a bit notchy from 1st to 2nd when it is cold. But when it warms up it is fine.
Has anyone helped or fixed this buy changing the gearbox oil?
Any recommendations would be appreciated

I actually went to a fully synthetic g/box oil in my Manual 3.5L TH - and yeah - it took a little longer to warm up then conventional stuff - but it was the smoothest for gear shifting at higher RPM once warm - great for my style of driving - but i always let fluids and metals warm up before giving them a pounding - ie brakes / oils etc
Can't remember the actual stuff i used - but yeah i recommend something that is full synth

I'd check the service book that came with the car to make sure you use something Mitsu approve of.
When I got my oil changed, I found that for a month or two 1st->2nd was actually worse when it was cold.

VMX 80, castrol. I suspect thats what Manual has used. I swear by it. Also like Manual said, it is a tiny bit clunky when cold, but thats in my 260,000km gearbox.

i had to replace a getrag 5spd in a VS commodore yesterday because it was worn out by the customer deciding to change his own gear oil. He used a 80w/90 gear oil, most manual boxes use 80w/90. but many new manual boxes use auto trans fluid like dexron III. unfortunately the getrag is one of them. check your owners book for the correct type and grade of oil
