View Full Version : Which Evo clutch?
Following the demise of my nearly new Exedy HD 240mm clutch I am looking for the toughest option available to replace it... which series Evo used a clutch that could be used in 3rd gens? And is it just the clutch and flywheel I require?
Should it be comparable, this is what I'll be looking at

hmm ill keep an eye on this thread, I haven't killed mine yet. but would be handy to know what other options i would have
Considering your running more power than me, as are other people, I'm deeming the clutch failure as either faulty, or poor installation... given that the mechanic took 13 hours to fit it, I'm going to say poor install. Its getting taken out and going to Exedy for installation.

if you go a evo clutch i believe you have to use the magna flywheel
Those HD Exedy clutches are designed to handle a lot of torque, their clamping load is pretty good. Unless you are pushing 500Nm torque at 3000rpm i highly suspect this was a very dodgy install. Stick with it I say, an organic/ceramic/paddle monster Evo clutch will be heavy as hell and crap to drive day to day
Glad to see your opinion backs up my thoughts Dave.. I was peaking at 360nm so no issues there. I want to take it to RAC to get pulled out, then sent to Exedy to be inspected... I would LOVE to stick with the same clutch but I am really paranoid to buy another one now at the risk that it fails again :(

Yeah, I would be more concerned about driveshafts before the clutch.
Cvs should be fine, I tend not to axle tramp, diff I already accept will be decimated at some point in time and will replace with either a ralliart box or put in whatever LSD pops up at a good price.
So far I'm actually really impressed, its put up with a hell of a beating!
Does anyone know the 240mm Mits 380 Exedy HD clutch part number?

Not sure on Mitsubishi part number but from Exedy its MBK-7702. Mitsubishi use an exedy clutch plate anyway so look elsewhere. I know Mal sells them. I bought mine from "Clutch & Brake Australia" for a really good price. Just keep in mind that the 380 clutch needs a 380 flywheel - get these from Mal as he has a very good price on them.
I've been using the 380 setup and so far I love it. I don't however have a FI setup and don't drive this car like its a racecar so I can't comment on its durability. However, I'm yet to experience any clutch slip despite some high rpm clutch drops (4500rpm+) and rougher driving. Gear changes are dead easy.
I bought my current setup from Mal, the only reason I wasn't going to this time is that a good mate is a manager at Supercheap so I can get it locally very cheap for convenience sake

Have not ignored your PM mate, just with moving and getting married a couple of weeks ago, still doing a lot of catching up
I am chatting to a couple of Evo people I know about what they think is the best set up for you. Personally I dont see a reason you can not use the 380 flywheel provided you have not toasted it. With the 380 clutch you need the 380 wheel but I am sure you can swap the other way around ok.
What sort of figures are you running at the flywheel at the moment? Also, if you figures are getting up there, may be an idea to chat to Ego about what he is running in his car

Going from last info from jase/ego, his clutch is no good and is killing it quickly. I can only imagine his torque outputs are right up there though even on a low boost tune. A custom clutch from someone like Monster Clutches might be the only avenue unless a beefy evo clutch can be made to work. TZABOY was running an evo clutch on his ralliart, it was very heavy and needed a bit of technique to use as it had a short shifter too. Dare i say he was pushing well over 250kw atw with the larger comprssor
Nfi on my flywheel figures, I only know power at the wheels, which is 200kw 360nm. If I could use the 380 fly with an evo clutch then I would do this at the sake of drivability.. the car is becoming a weekend car anyway.
No dramas with the PM Mal, I appreciate the help.

i have a stock evo9 clutch in my TH 3.5L.. lovely to drive everyday, not heavy at all... (i am comparing that to the massive brassy i had in my evo8 though)... stock evo clutch will handle your HP just fine .. if your lucky you can pick them up very very cheap from guys who pull them out of new evo's straight away in order to fit heavy gear.. ive bought 2 evo9 clutch kits in the last two years... paid $50 for the first one and $100 for the 2nd.. they were both very lucky finds though.... evo9 stock clutch is heavier than a HD magna exedy.. ive driven both....

How much power will a stock evo clutch hold in a modded evo??
Looking at making north of 200fwkW soon with a mivec build.
I'm running a 380 flywheel with a 380 Exedy clutch, 240mm compared with 230mm... the evo clutch would still work with the larger flywheel yeah?

im also running evo 9 clutch that had 60,000kms on it when installed. I got it for free when a friend upgraded to an OS twin-plate in his Evo. He had done some track days, and hill climbs with this clutch and now I have done 40+ 1/4 mile launches at dragstrip, 2 track days, and 8 months of daily driving and still as good as the day it was fitted. Fitted with no mods to my TJ, and I just retained the original flywheel
If i was replacing my clutch i would go EVO 9 again (also fyi - the stock flywheel in my tj sports and the stock flywheel from my ralliart manual parts car where both 240mm) (Edit. I mean the flywheels could be used with the 240mm factory evo clutch 9 without any modification)

vvr44, the VRX does not run a 240mm clutch, never did from the factory
The issue is not with the genuine clutch plates, it is mainly the exedy ones as the rivets are slightly differently placed. They will rub on the inner edge of the flywheel. I have seen this many times. The cure is a slight step
In the Magna, the flywheel dimensions are the same from TE right through to TW including the Ralliarts
It is not the flywheel that is 240mm it is the clutch disk when the refrence is made, the flywheel itself is far larger than 240mm

My clutch was toast after 6,000kms.. It did cop a massive flogging in Melbourne which was the last straw. My clutch is carbon fibre with 1600kgs of clamping force. it never slipped or let me down once for the first 5,500kms and was good. As it is carbon fibre it was a biatch to get going from a stop, carbon fibre works better and better the hotter it gets. it was a silly idea for a FWD street car as it is a race clutch and is designed to be pulled apart and rebuilt regularly. When lifting your foot off the clutch you could hear it wearing as you had to ride it to make it go and that would cause wear on the clutch. That clutch was made by Extreme Clutches in SA on there second attempt as the first attempt with a ceramic clutch which failed after 50kms on a Dyno. I have a guy in Sydney that will make me a new clutch soon, he makes all sorts of clutches custom made and is reasonable on price. I was looking into EVO clutches for a replacement.

Ofcourse your right. What I meant to say was both the flywheel in my tj sports and ralliart manual parts car matched the factory 240mm evo 9 clutch and pressure plate without modification
Sooo.. just to clarify.. Exedy OEM Evo 9 replacement clutch kit... will suit the 380 flywheel, but will need to be slightly machined to clear some bolts on the clutch? Or won't require machining? My mate can get the clutch for me for $480 so it seems like a goer to me!
Kk.... clutch is at mechanic, car goes on tow truck in the morning... if this clutch doesn't fit I'm going to throw things at walls! (Exedy Evo 9 OEM replacement) with 380 clutch. Flywheel being machined with step to inner edge to suit.
Evo 9 clutch goes alright! Nice bite point and I can't slip it yet, but I haven't tried a skid yet. all in all, rather impressed. Wish I had gone straight for this instead of the shitty 380 HD clutch. Its cheaper too.
