Hi,

Sister in law had her TJ S2 Exec break down the other day. Apparantly she had to have the Crank Sensor replaced and the distributor done as well?

Not sure, but what is this crank angle sensor bolt, what does it do and where is it located.
Also is it any relationship to the dissy?

Also is it near the cam belt? I remember vaguely my brother in law replaced this crank angle sensor bolt about a year ago, and he said he damaged the timing belt and replaced that also at same time.
Should it fail so soon? Also is it cause it was a home job?

Bill was $800 so I'm somewhat curious.

I believe the third gen magna has two sensors for ignition timing. One is on the end of the crankshaft just behind the cam belt. The sensor is held on by two bolts IIRC. The second sensor is on the end of the rear camshaft, possibly inside the distributor.

Others might be able to give you more detail, and correct me if I'm wrong.

I did a cam belt swap on a TJ but I went nowhere near the crank angle sensor, doesn't need to be touched for a belt swap, so what he actually did originally is anyone's guess.

Incorrect actually, the sensor needs to be removed to take off the pulley to replace the seal. Also, when the belt comes off, either you need to undo the plug up top or the sensor to get the belt off if you are really stupid enough to be leaving the old seal there.

There is a crank shaft bolt that holds on the front pulley, then there are 2 smaller bolts which hold on the CAS

You then have a cam angle sensor in the dist

If both items have been stated as needing replacing then I would suggest that whom ever is doing the job did not know how to check these items as I am yet to see both fail at the same time

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah I'll heck her bill tonight and see what was actually done.

What does this sensor actually do in the car? Do they fail? Is it an age thing, thrashing thing, what causes them to go?

I am more interested in the symptoms of a bad CAS. Is there a way to test via multimeter?

Altera - from memory - the service manual does specify how to check if you have a faulty c.a.s otherwise hooking up the mutII would also inform you as well.

Simple, car will not run.... a Hall sensor either works or does not work
