View Full Version : Keyless Entry works, but only really close up.

OK so for the last few days my keyless entry has been playing up, the doors would occasionally not open or lock and I just put it down to a dying battery in the remote.
Today I replaced the battery in the remote and reprogrammed the car to accept the remote.
Now most of the time (not always) the car will accept me opening the drivers door with the first press but then I cannot open the rest of the doors with another press, nor can I lock the doors using the remote.
But strangely enough if I hold the remote next to the drivers side mirror all buttons work as desired.
Is there perhaps a reciever for the remote in this area? Or has anybody else experienced this? I'd try another remote except I dont have one handy.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks in Advance.

That's odd, my Pajero has been doing the exact same thing the last 3-4 days. Driving me up the wall. Replaced the battery today thinking it was it and it hasn't really fixed the problem. Must be a Mits thing.

I'm in the same boat, started a thread a few weeks ago about it, and no replies :'( *sulks*

Mines done pretty much the same, I'm assuming the remote was dying and now is totally dead.
When I try to reprogram the thing the lights flash but there is no sound and I just gave the internals from a spare remote I had in a cracked case to a friend who bought a TJ so looks like I need to get a new remote.

In my case, with the TJ02, it was the BEM playing up. Do the remote twin stage lock would cock up, and unlock all the doors single press and then not lock them again. Or the security light would be on all night. I tried several remotes, (around 8) and it made no difference as the system went back to its ways after the a couple of days.
In the end, remotes were abandoned and just the key was used. The car was sold last week, so no issue anymore.

Yes - If you need a new BEM - as you need a ecu & key pack. Can use a 2nd hand one but the ecu, key barrel and bem must be removed from the same car as yours
No - if you bypass the BEM locking system by installing an aftermarket alarm system. You can get generic alarm systems for as cheap as $40 delivered from eBay. Most don't come with immobilisers so you may want to install a killswitch instead. Alternatively you can use a branded system like one from Mongoose or Rhino and they should have immobilisers in them.
Anyway - to all those having problems, before you fork out for a new alarm system or BEM,Ecu & keypack, rip off the door trims and inspect the cables and locking mechanisms on the inside. I had similar problems and found out that a cable with a yellow casing that clips onto the door locking barrel was loose. If this is loose/broken it short circuts and gives the wrong signals to the bem and the car was unlocking, locking randomly.
A couple of months ago one of my remotes died - opened it up and discovered I had the wonderful problem of battery plate having disconnected from the circuit board.
So I stuck it in a drawer and used the other remote until it stopped working on Monday. So I pulled them apart, checked batteries and swapped 1, resoldered the battery plate to board on the broken one (the other one I'd fixed a year or so ago) and neither remote would work.
Multi-meter said I had normal voltages from battery and switches were working fine, so I thought to reprogram the remotes and now they both work normally.
Intermittently working or poor range sounds like a battery voltage or connectivity issue, but odd behaviour like unlocking all doors on first button press and leaving security light on constantly sounds like BEM.
Hopefully yours isn't too hard to diagnose. If you need a spare remote to test, just find a local Magna owner who isn't scared of having his remote unlocking 2 cars for 5 minutes. Once you've programmed the remotes once, it's pretty easy - I did it straight off and have only done it once before over a year ago. If you're close to me, I'll volunteer my remote for testing.
Cheers!

Thanks for the replies guys, although Im not sure If Im any better off after reading them :)
I just cracked it open again and got the multimeter onto it and it appears to be OK. Also just went out and checked connection in the door and unplugged/replugged the BEM.
No idea....
By any chance, does this seem to happen at your home more often, or pretty much everywhere??

I had (and still have) the same problem. Even bought a brand new one from Mitsubishi and it has roughly the same range which really is only a few meters from the car

Ho do you reprogram the remote?
Rangipants, there's instructions on here if you do a search, but from memory, you put the key in and rotate it back and forth between off and on 5 times.
This will cause the indicators to flash to show it's in program mode.
then you press a button on your remote and the indicators will flash to show that remote has been programmed in.
Repeat with aditional remotes, up to 4 in total. (I think it supports up to 4 remotes).
Then turn key off and you're done.

OK, update on the situation.
I can now open all the doors from any distance as per usual, one click or two clicks works fine, as does the boot release.
However locking the doors still requires a key, or for me to hold the remote right below the drivers side mirror.
Strange.
