Hi All,

My sister has just bought a 2002 Tj Exec.

It has an aftermarket alarm that came with one remote. She has dropped the remote a few times and even lost it once. When its locked with this system she cant start the car with the key.

My question is how can i go about removing this alarm system and can we go back to the stock system.

Is this a job for an auto elec?

All help would be appreciated. :woot:

If you can find out the make and model, you might be able to get the install manual off the internet. This will tell you how it was installed, and how to undo the install.

I've got a '97 Lancer which may need to go through the same process.

I've gone thru this problem on a Laser and a Cordia....in both instances I had to first locate all the alarm components - keypad, horn, backup battery, master unit....then trace each wire, remove, reconnect etc. It's time consuming especially if it was originally installed by a professional who will hide the wiring. The more expensive units are a real pain. From memory I spent half a day identifying the comonents after doing research on the web and then a full day removing the unit.
I'd hate to pay an auto elec $80+ per hour to do this job!

Such "undocumented mods" can be a real pain to restore to original! Took me a while to remove the aftermarket non-working cruise control off my TS. Fortunately it was easy to tell original wiring from aftermarket wiring.

Wouldn't it just be easier to replace the remote?

But, as above, if you want to remove the system then you need to either a) find the brand & make of the alarm system and see what parts it has or b) spend hours inspecting your car and trying to look for any cables, devices, sensors that look out of place.

I suppose you should start with the obvious; the siren and work back from there. As an FYI all the car looms have been wrapped from factory with tape, with the engine looms have a sleeving on them as well. You may have to cut the tape to see any extra wires are hidden in the loom or any wires have been touched and other coloured wires connected to them. Check the firewall as there should only be one spot where wires come through the firewall and that's where the engine loom comes through (right near the rear gearbox mount). If there's any other holes with cables - then that could be the alarm system. If the installer is any good at hiding cables then it they'd probably go through the opening the guards (near the headlights, or the brake master cylinder on the drivers side) and following the factory wiring already there that goes over the wheel and goes into the cabin.

Obviously only once you find ALL the parts THEN remove it. Don't start cutting wires only to have only undone half the alarm system and cannot start the car. Also - make sure the battery is disconnected, there are systems that can detect that a cable(s) has been cut and going into a lockdown mode. I'd start by removing the alarm control unit wherever it is hidden.

Good luck with it - hope you're able to remove it.

My sister has tried to replace the remote but can't start the car with a new remote disabling the system.

So it looks like a bit of Internet searching for install instructions it's going to be.
