Hello gang my Tp is starting to leak at the seal on top of the steering box on the rack where the column input shaft goes into it.
I can see a circlip that needs to come out and then i can pop the seal out and replace it.
Just wondering if anyone has replaced one and if by chance they have the seal number so i can buy before hand as long walk to the parts places if i remove the seal first to get the number off it.
Replaced all the hoses from the power steer fluid reservoir to pump and cooler pipe last weekend that were weeping.(were still originals) They outlasted the longest pressure hose that failed 10 years ago by a long long way!!! Cheers Vee

Read the manual and you will see it is not a simple "pop out the old one and pop in a new one". Usually they leak because there is wear and the correct setup has to be followed. Exchange rack perhaps?

you have a universal bolt to undo just above the seal
the rack bolts have to be undone to get some working space
the rack drops
best idea is to fit a reconditioned rack

Leak was there before i changed the hoses and it is only a wet dusty patch does not drop onto the ground so not sure you can really classify as a proper leak. Rack is in first class condition no wear at all.
Yeah i know not much working space i changed the one on my Nissan Exa not long back and did that thru the small hole in the firewall once you get the column out of the way.Small plate there about as big as a spreadout hand. Workshop Manual says to remove rack for that as well and thats the Nissan manual not haynes or gregorys which probably say the same.
Looks about enough room to do the same with Magna so will see.
Where theres a will there is often a way. Sometimes i make custom tools to do some jobs.
Hoses were not dropping oil either just gone hard from age and heat and starting to get a damp spot at the ends. 22 years and 150k.
Rack is easier to drop than the nissan and that Nissan seal only lasted until 100k. Age just the main problem the material they are made from goes hard.
Might just pull the circlip out and see if i can read the seal number first so i can get one in town next month. Vee

Last weekend changed the top seal on my power steering rack and instead doing it in situ like i have with other cars i elected to pull the unit. There is just enough room to do it in situ but wanted to extricate the old seal intact as others have been able to read the seal number and make before extraction.
Seal has no visual marking so had to measure it and we got a seal to fit although not an easy one to get $8.90 plus freight.
Size for others that may need it in the future is 19x37x7. Seal number is 102748 but has no make on it.
Flushed and installed new fluid and while underneath found a weeping thermostat gasket so replaced that as well and all is with the old girl once again as done 1000km since and no leaks!! Vee
