Hey guys,

Just wondering what exhaust system I could buy for my Magna (specs are in my sig) to give it a nice note, preferably without a cannon? I am so used to the exhaust systems on commodores that I have never looked into exhaust systems for other cars.

Also, I am looking for a nice set of 16, 17 or 18 inch mags but I need some ideas. eBay doesn't really have a good selection, well I haven't seen any that I like yet.

I might also be lowering the car, the springs on eBay lower the car 30mm, but I want between 1.5 to 2 inches lower then standard, what is the best suspension setup/brand that still gives it a comfortable ride?

Thanks for any help :)

I'm in the middle of fitting exactly your list of mods to my TF :)

I got the Redback 2.5" system paired up with a 2.5" hi-flow cat and I love it! Not too loud or droney but not boring at all!
As for wheels, go see your nearest tyre place... I was going to go with ozzytyres but a bit of discussion on here and I went local for a couple of hundred more got better mags and tyres too!
Maybe get in on the coilover group buy if you have some spare cash after all that ;)

Seems like a pretty good combo. There is a good 100cpi cat that you can get on eBay for about $150 that will be a huge improvement. Just make sure that you replace your rear muffler first.

If you want to lower, make sure that you get king or dobinson springs. Cheapo ones will sag early.

Thanks for that mate, you wouldn't happen to have a video of what the exhaust sounds like would you? I have had the rear muffler replaced twice within a month (just with a normal muffler) and it sounds like the muffler is already burn't out. The guy that done the work at the exhaust shop said that he has had a few problems with the rear mufflers for Magnas so I don't see any point taking the car back if it's just going to happen again. But now i'm thinking of fitting a sports exhaust.

Going to the local tyre shop is a good idea, then they can hold wheels up against the car so I get an idea of what they would look like. As for tyres, I want something good like Kumho Ecsta SPT or any other good brand, not a fan of really cheap tyres haha.

Coilovers are not a bad idea but they cost heaps more then normal lowered springs and shockers don't they?

What should I replace the rear muffler with? Or are you saying to just remove the rear muffler and replace it with tail pipe straight out? I see if I can find the cat on eBay.

There's a few king springs on eBay but half of them are standard and the rest lower the car 30mm, not sure if that would be lower enough haha. But thanks for the advice, i'll see what I can find in those brands.

here's where I got mine http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110867793983 200 seemed a good compromise between flow and tree-hugging.
I'll try and make a recording of it, its not suburu-baby-swallowing-cannon sounding but it sounds right to me haha (and to the boys in blue which is important when you're back on P's)

Coilovers? Expensive? Yep... but you can always go with the springs/shocks recommendations from this forum for less!

EDIT: If bits of your exhaust system are deteriorating that quick, maybe you're running rich or something.. it'd poison your cat' for sure, so best to check before plonking some $$ down on a new one!

seeing as you have a 4 cylinder i would just replace the rear muffler with a straight through lukey or similar i had a lukey on my old te 2.4 but i had no middle muffler and that thing was loud id advise against removing mufflers all together

i have a V6 and got quoted for my TF FROM hiTech mufflers:

Extractors- $1200.00 fitted
Hi-flow Catalytic converter- $680.00 fitted
Mild steel Cat-Back sports exhaust- $480.00 fitted
Stainless steel Cat-Back sports exhaust- $880.00 fitted

note this is for a custom exhaust and yours will be definately be cheaper

while for suspension i had a chat with mal and he reccomended :

dobinson springs(stock,LOW,SUPERLOW) FOR over $200
BOGE Shocks complet set for $570

i have a thread on my TF suspension questions here:http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94666&page=4&highlight=suspension+woes

That's a pretty high quote. The catback price seems reasonable, but the high-flow cat.... the cats alone are about $200 for a reasonable high-flow unit. I'm not an expert, but it certainly doesn't take 4-5 hours to fit a cat!

Also, I am looking for a nice set of 16, 17 or 18 inch mags but I need some ideas. eBay doesn't really have a good selection, well I haven't seen any that I like yet.
Try your local wheel and tyre stores.

Alternatively, you could find a set of second-hand 16" or 17" mags off another Magna or 380.

The current flavour of the month is the 18" wheels that come standard on the CJ Lancer VR-X and Ralliart.

I might also be lowering the car, the springs on eBay lower the car 30mm, but I want between 1.5 to 2 inches lower then standard, what is the best suspension setup/brand that still gives it a comfortable ride?
King Lows are about a 45mm drop. Dobinson also make springs around a similar height. I wouldn't recommend going lower as your ride will definitely suffer.

Nothing to do with tree hugging... As someone who unfortunately lives near some main roads, please please please please keep it quiet...

Exhaust sound should be about quality, not quantity.

What would be causing it to run rich. I didn't think that there was a problem because it gets 650 kms to a tank and runs perfect. I have replaced the spark plugs, spark plug leads, air filter, fuel filter, timing belt, engine oil and oil filter, transmission oil and oil filter, all within the last 15,000kms.

If there is a problem of running rich then I would like to fix that before I change the exhaust again.

Will Lancer wheels fit on a Magna? Yeah between 30mm and 45mm would be nice, and with 18" wheels, but what ever I come across that would look good I will probably get.

Not all Lancer wheels will. I think most Evos will, as will the CJ wheels (latest Lancer model). The wheels fit fine but you will need new tyres, as the Lancer tyres aren't load rated for Magnas.

King Low SP springs are a 30mm drop, King Lows are a 45mm drop. Personally I'd go Lows.

Yeah most Lancer wheels are 4 stud pattern I think. Just had a look at the CJ VR-X wheels and they look nice. There is a set on eBay for $450 with unroadworthy tyres. But they already have 6 bids.

Looks like i'm going to get King Lows then haha, will they make it ride much harder?

Red Valdez

Yeah, they're around 25% stiffer than standard springs, off the top of my head.

If you're lowering your car, you want/need stiffer springs anyway, as your car will be more prone to bottoming out from the reduced suspension travel.

I have Lows with KYB shocks and I'm pretty happy with them. Firm but far from uncomfortable.

Thanks for that info mate, the only reason I ask is because I also have a VS Commodore that has been lowered 2 inches from standard height and it is really uncomfortable to drive, the suspension is just too hard. And it has pedders sports ryder springs and comfort gas shocks.

At least now I have something to think about. I will also be doing a full respray (same color) and fixing up some dents around the body, replacing the interior carpet (it old one has stains everywhere and is coming apart in some places). But for now I would just like to get a set of nice wheels and lower it.

You might want to consider getting a bigger engine before you go too nuts on the car. The 2.4 is underpowered imho

To be honest, I'm happy enough with the power it has. I wouldn't mind doing a 3.5L conversion but I may as well just buy a TJ Magna with the 3.5L already in it. It would probably cost less. Even if I do decided to do that later on, I can swap the wheels and suspension if I wanted to.

CJ lancer is a five stud pattern and most should fit magna, have aclose look b4 u buy VRX rims for 450, they go for a lot more than that if they are in good condition and are 18s

Ok thanks for that mate. I was expecting to pay more then that anyway. Where would be the best place to get those wheels? I was thinking wreckers maybe but because those Lancers aren't that old, they might be hard to find.

If u check ebay there are 2 or 3 vrx lancers being wrecked now, I know 2 of them have cracked front wheels, but u might be able to work something out, don't be surprised if u pay 1k for teh wheels, I know they look good, but u can get aftermarket packages pretty cheap for magna's these days, and for 1k u could get some nice 17s with reasonable tyres, 18's will set u back more. I hada second gen with a 2.4, seemed a good engine to me, mine had a 5 speed manual tacked on tho. There's lots of cheap stuff for these gen of cars,

I would like to see a photo of someones Magna with the King Low Springs just to get an idea how the ride height would be on mine if I got them.

I have already replaced the Timing Belt, done it myself :) none of the seals were leaking so I didn't disturb them.

You should change the seals anyway. If you are doing the belt, there are only 2 cam seals and a crank seal to do anyway. Not too difficult. Did you do the water pump?

There are a lot of magnas here that have king 30mm drop springs. Have a look through the members machin threads for some ideas

My Magna has King Lows (45mm drop). Check the Member's Machine link in my signature for photos. Plenty of other members have Lows, so if you use the search feature to search Member's Machines for 'Lows', I'm sure you'll have a tonne of results.

When yr looking at ride heights on cars, remember that the 4 cyl engine doesn't have the weight of a V6 so the front might ride a little higher with less spring compression, probably give a little better ride comfort if you find some progressive springs rather than kings which are linear. Look at Tein, but be prepared for 200 extra and maybe harder to find for yr magna. The car pictured in my avatar has lovells lows, bit lower than kings, but still on 15's

This is how mine currently sits. Now looking at the photos, the right front looks higher then the left front. Sorry about the car being dirty by the way, its been too cold to wash it and it rains every day as well.

And that was another thing that I was also thinking, about the 4 cylinder being lighter then the V6.

This is what is confusing me at the moment, you say that King Lows drop the car 45mm (fair enough), but all the King lows on eBay say that they drop the car 30mm: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/150720562679?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_698wt_1163

King springs cattle dog and contact info. Go to the horses mouth, appears kings now only make low std and raised, check LOvells website and catalogue, you might find something interesting there, the SL's on my tf were great, except for teh bottoming out at speed and humps, sure stuck to the road though and with the 4cyl engine, might be better

King make a Low SP (30mm drop) and a regular Low (45mm drop) for third gen Magnas. It may be the eBay listing is referring to the Low SP's. These will have different part/catalogue no's.
