Depends where you look, what brand and who you get from. I'd recommend jumping onto www.mitsfix.com and having a look at the prices. It's run by a forum sponsor and the prices are very competitive plus the service & delivery times are usually top notch. Otherwise contact your local Burson, Autobarn or even Supercheap and ask for their prices.
The timing replacement should cost $400-600 fitted. The kit for the belt alone should be no more than $150 however it'd be a very wise idea to buy and replace get the tensioner pulley as well. You may also want to replace the water pump, camshaft & crank shaft seals for good measure. I believe Mal (Mitsfix) charges around $170 for these kits with all the required seals and tensioner pulley. Quite good value indeed.
2) Cheap bolt-on Exhaust system. You could get the VRX/Sports/GTV(i) exhaust system if you want to remain factory or get a Lukey bolt-on for the magna. These mufflers give a nice note without being too loud.
3) No point replacing the CV joints alone. Just replace the driveshaft(s). Mal sells brand new ones for $130 per side.

lol Forgot to mention parts costs:
S/H exhaust from wreckers $100 possibly?
Cam belt kit, with hydraulic tensioner, and water pump. I bought that recently for $229
Drive shaft boots. About $15 each from local parts shop, need 4. Complete with grease and retaining bands.

lol @above post. He did say "reasonable" cost.
Exhaust - if you are just looking to replace a rusted out stock system with a good one, trawl the wreckers.
Kit - shop around for the cheapest. Check out rockauto.com
CV joints - try rebuilding them first, with fresh grease and boots. If they are not too far gone this often helps them carry on for a few more years.
Needless to say it will all be cheaper if you do the labour yourself, but it depends on your mechanical aptitude. I don't think mechanics give discounts for people on a pension, unfortunately.
Those prices are quite reasonable. I'm providing a guide to get new parts that in the long run will save the OP money. Labour is costly.
1) Timing belt kit. $170 is darn cheap for all those parts. Mitsu sells those kits for well over $250. Places like Repco & Bursons ask $100 for a belt let alone pulleys & seals. Again - doing a timing belt is tricky & time consuming, so why not replace all those parts to ensure those part don't need to changed until anouther 100,000km? Unless he's doing it himself, labour to remove the timing belt will cost more than the extra expense for the pulleys and seals.
2) CV joints. What's the point of spending money getting new cv joints and using old boots, clips, bearings and driveshaft? It'll probably just break again. Not to mention all the effort of mucking around with taking the darn thing apart. $130 later = brand new driveshaft and an easy 120-150km's of usage, if not more. Most magna's would be lucky to have more than 1 driveshaft replacement in their lifetimes.

A brand new Lukey muffler is $150. Bolts straight up. $50 more and you end up with a better muffler allowing bit more power, less fuel consumption and it's brand new not some beaten up half rusted second hand one.
Again $15x4 is $60 and after a good few hours of mucking around you've still got a second hand driveshaft that will probably have issues in a few 1000km. For $30-40 more you can get a reco driveshaft that usually comes with warranty.

Shop around for the labour. Especially when it comes to a cam belt replacement. 4 hours roughly on labour @ $90 per hour v $75 per hour is a $60 saving. Handy bonus money to spend on fixing your exhaust or whatever else.

My suggestions are based on minimal cost for DIY. As a pensioner myself I know how tight money can be. I own several cars but if I had to pay for labour, I could maybe afford a bicycle. Fortunately I have a few decades of experience on car work behind me even though in better times I could have afforded to be lazy and support a mechanic financially, and that knowledge is helping me now to keep my cars on the road.
Work out the cost of your suggestions, then add up mine. Which one will be more appealing to a pensioner? (Assuming of course he can DIY the work.)
You clean out the joints on the CV, inspect them for play and roughness, then reassemble with NEW grease, boots and clips if they pass inspection. $60 all up and an afternoon's work. If you catch the leaking boot problem early enough, the driveshaft is good to go. Done this twice now on different Magnas without any problems. Better than spending $260 on a new pair.
Everyone makes choices, and is free to do so. You, me and the OP included. OP can decide for himself what to do.

Dont worry about the $229 kit with the pre tensioner that will usually fail fairly quickly and then the issue with having to deal with warranty issues to the USA< is not worth the headache
I can do the following, all Japanese products
Complete timing belt kit is $142.50, this includes the belt, seals, idler pulley and pre tensioner pulley. You do not need a pre tensioner unless yours is giving you issues now with noisy cold starts, if you do need one, save yourself both the time and future labour costs of replacing a cheap aftermarket one and get a genuine one. That way you only pay to have it installed once, well more to the point you dont pay for installation as it will be done with the kit anyway.
Water pump is $87.50, again is in my ebay store.
Drive shafts, dont mess around with used shafts, not worth the hassle, I often see "re booted" shafts which come in and the customer is complaining about drive line vibrations when comming off throttle etc etc. New ones are $135 each, this is 2 new joings and new shaft ready to install, no messing around with drive shaft greese and messy joints which will no doubt be reaching near the end of the service life anyway.
Remember, you can save $100 or so now but may cost you a lot more in the near future when you have to pay to do all of this again.

Bummer
Rang your bayswater num sat no reply, then rang your ebay site, was asked if 3L or 3.5L,as I didn't know (dumb eh )the guy said he would ask his boss and ring back, which he didn't.spent all afternoon in the rain searching for the stamp, which I didn't find, but found the info in the back of the book .3L
And unfortunately for you been the impatient person that I am I sourced them locally for around the same price.
Also a new set of cv joints complete shafts etc installed $376
Muffler nearly sorted as well.
sorry about that, thanks for all your help anyway ,much appreciated.me and the brother are going to install the cam belt, any tips,he's pretty good mechanically built his 32 Ford from scratch on his own,and his 98 Pontiac, just about finished putting that back together, here's hoping .

I'm glad you considered all the available options and did what you are comfortable with.
Tips for installing the cam belt? Yep, just one. Read the manual details and follow the steps implicitly.
Oh, one more - gather the required tools before you start.

Whilst I've never dealt with MadMagna and wouldn't know him from a bar of soap, he did say "call me on Monday"........

. . . . he did say "call me on Monday"........
. . . . and he probably meant "during business hours" as well. Most working people want the weekend to themselves and family, and turn their phones off. lol Pensioners (like me and the OP) tend to forget that.

only rang first number for a few short rings just in case it might be a home number,( which is unlikely, why would anyone put their home number for all to see) and secondly the other number was the eBay shop number to which I spoke to the person who didn't get back to me.And I am on a disability pension not an old age pensioner, due to the wonders of modern medicine ,if the surgeons were mechanics ,no cars would be running.well maybe after several trips back to the shop lol hopefully the same for my leg ,have a nice day.

Sorry mate, but you called us on Saturday, in the afternoon, we would have either called on Monday OR left the message that we did. Either way you would not have received the parts on Saturday. If you did not know the engine size when you called, calling you back later that after noon would not have helped at all as Brendan who works here on Saturdays could have helped you there and then if you knew the size plus these are listed in my ebay store so you could have also clicked buy now as well??

Given that I have a shop and a work shop, ringing for a few short rings is useless, sometimes if I am on another call it will take a few more thans a few rings for me to put the other call on hold and grab the next call. When you call a busy business you need to remember that there may also be other customers being assisted and you need to step into the line lol
