View Full Version : Another suspension question about boges

Hey fellas

Still having trouble understanding the spring/shock relationship?

Would like to fit some boges to the veradas, and I'm not fussed about lowering with new springs etc.

Question is, will just a new set of boges shocks all around help firm up the ride a little and reduce body pitch etc? Or is that the springs job?

I guess what I am asking is, do you need to do both or will just the shocks firm it up a little and give a much better ride by themselves? Hope it's making sense

Shock absorbers have two characteristics, compression damping (when you hit a bump) and rebound damping (when the wheel moves down again)
It's a compromise, between comfort and handling. Town driving requires low values for both for a comfortable drive but on a bumpy dirt road they will feel horrible, with the car bouncing up and down. Higher values will control the wheels better on bumpy roads, but small bumps won't be absorbed.
"Firm up a little" is a vague requirement, it really depends on what valving is in the shock absorbers you buy. Some expensive Konis have externally adjustable damping, so you can set the ride/handling compromise the way you want. Do a lot of research before you buy anything. And no, you don't need to change the springs if you don't want to.

Having said that, most shockers wear out over the years and loose the ability to control wheel travel over any bumps, so you might be happy with new shocks if you stick to the standard settings.

Given the age of the car, your suspension could definitely do with renewal.... why not install a set of standard height King Springs along with a set of Boges?

Thanks madmax, makes a little more sense to me now.

Red, thanks for the reply. Only reason I wasn't thinking about new springs was purely a cost thing as I was thinking of getting both veradas done, that could be very expensive. Although I don't know exactly the dollars yet :)

Can't be a cheap exercise though, have seen boges advertised for $480 not sure if that's cheap. Will talk to mal this week

To be honest I would start with the Boges if you want to retain std ride height, from what I saw of your black car on Saturday this car is almost show room condition, although I did not drive the car from what you were telling me about your expectations of the car I think that putting in any after market springs may lead to dissapointment.

Boge will on their own retain a great ride quality and at the same time will still with the dampening give you a better cornering ability, not huge but will still be there

My KH recently had Pedders Factory height springs, and factory shocks. The ride was firmer slightly than the factory sports suspension because of the springs. The rebound etc was very good I thought, no bounce etc or rebound.

I have changed to Dobinsons springs with Boge shocks and the car is much tighter on the road to drive. The shocks are brilliant! Go for Boge definately.
