There is a voltage regulator in the alternator which can be replaced - it holds the brushes which if worn can cause intermittent operation. However, it could be due to other reasons like loose battery terminals, alt diodes failing etc.
So you'll need to check the easy things first like cables and connections and then progress further up the ladder.
