so i changed thermostat just to be on safe side still no different anyone have any ideas???

As MadMax said.. voltage regulator sounds on the money. It seems a few people have had this problem recently. Definitely recommend not driving the car very far (if at all) until it's fixed, you could end up killing various electrics.

Don't get one from the wreckers. I needed one for a TS, bought one from the wreckers and it was no good. Same with the second I exchanged. Gave up and swapped it for a starter motor instead, and got my alternator rebuilt hy a Sparky.

Our 2001 magna had very similar probs. started with the batt light coming on and the temp gaugE going crazy.

It then turned into the temp gauge indicating ok at idle but it would head north with rev's and stay over the redline.
Back to idle and temp induicated ok again.

A call to the RAC and we were told the voltage from the alternator was all over the place, up to 15.5v. We were advised to drive home with the lights on... Point being we were told a short journey would be ok.

We drove home and the next morning the car wouldn't start - batt totally flat.

So off to the mechanic who replaced the alternator (and a service). When we went to pick up the car we were told the car wouldn't idle due to unknown electrical problems and would need to go to an auto elect. The mechanic advised that it was possible the computer may have been damaged by the excess voltage from the defective regulator but it was beyond his area of expertise ...

So now the car won't idle at all. If you hold the acc down, the revs kind of hunt up and down. it's difficult to keep the revs steady and The instant you come off the acc the revs die and the motor stalls.
The car was being started off a jump pack as the batt was still flat from the previous night.

Is it likely that this is a comp problem or could it be something like the airflow sensor (assuming the magna has one?).
If the computer is damaged would it be easier to get a secondhand one or fix the existing one?

Any help or suggestions appreciated, if more info would help I'll post it

Thanks

Sounds like the ECU has copped it.. maybe try getting a 2nd hand one. But it's probably best to see an auto electrician so the problem can be rectified properly and safely

Pity my post disappeared. It would have been post #2 if it was there. Is someone deleting my posts, or is the server having problems?
