Hi lads,

I need to do something about the speakers in my magna. Nothing coming out of the passenger side, and i get crackling in the parcel shelf ones using cd's or radio.

What type and size do i need to replace the door and rear parcel shelf ones.

6 or 6.5 inch speakers in the front doors. Rear parcel shelves should be 6x9's.

Mate I'm sure Peas would agree, a set of component speakers would give great rewards.....

Hertz are kicking around on Ebay really cheap ATM and a 25mm tweeter will fit in a verada sail pod....
Theres lots of discussion about wether they genuine or not on MEA, a quick google search will find it....

Good reading

Search for MDF Speaker mount or baffle....
And verada tweeter pod or sail.....

BTW the most productive way to search AMC is in Google - "aussiemagna then your topic "

Ok question what do you regard as component speakers?

First you have Coaxil's with the mid/treble in the same casing as the midbass, see pic below. These come in most popular 2 way, 3 way and 4way, each "way" pretty much shows that the manufacture has fitted another separate speaker to handle different freq's which can result in better detail but if you are after something with real nice, clean and crisp detail I have to suggest component speakers.

Then you have proper component speakers these are speakers where each unit is actually separate. So in 2way components you have a Midbass, tweeter and then a cross over.

Heres a pic of a true 2 way component set.
http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad217/peaandham_bucket/XT6022-2.jpg

And heres a pic of a true 3 way component set.
http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/ad217/peaandham_bucket/k2_165_kkrx3.jpg

Now the difference between the 2 split/component sets is that the 3 way has an extra driver, this is designed to take the load of the other two drivers. The extra speaker is a dedicated midrange so it handles the frequency's of about 315hz through to about 4-6k generally, this then results in tighter/extra midbass and smoother roll of from the tweeter because those drivers are not trying to do more than they naturally want to if you will.

Now if you are looking at spending no more than say about $100-$130 I would just recommend some decent coaxils, if you only want to spend sub $700 for a brand new set a decent 2 Way Component set will go very well. 2 Way Splits are very easy to get sounding well, but you have to get committed with door prep.

This is my door.

The inside has completely been deadened with Dynamat extreme, the lock rods have been removed and wrapped in tape to stop rattles, then the service holes in the door have been completely sealed with MDF, tape and Deadner to make the door as sealed as possible to optimize the performance of the midbass. Tweeter location is also very important as those freq's are the ones that human ears are most sensitive to.

A 3 way set up can sound bloody terrific but if you cannot make the install of all the components work properly than you have failed and should've stuck with the 2 way install.

So you've seen my doors now these are my fiber glassed A Pillars

This is the best setup I have had but I started with 2 way, tried 3 Way in many different ways, I used Focal Midranges and Dyn Midranges in some custom kick panels I made and this result was. .

Neither setup worked particularly well, so now im finally heading in the right path. So it all comes down to what you want, and how much you want to spend for it.

If you just want something to drop into the doors with no modifications req'd part from maybe having to redrill the speaker mounts, you could go for a 2 way coaxial with a rotating tweeter - which if you angle it toward you to the extent possible would possible provide better sound than a fixed 2/3 way coax. Focal, Alpine, Polk and others all do 6-6.5inch coaxials with this feature.

What are trying to do, scare every one off ;)

Components would sound easily 2 to 3 times better than a set of 2 or 3 ways in the doors, quite easily lifting the sound so it comes from near the windscreen.

Only if you were persuing the holy grail of Sound quality, or your love of custom fabrication, would you run 3 way components.
Doing all the extra work of baffles, sound deadening, absorbant pads, working out off axis/offaxis placement and tuning, would allow you get the components to sound twice as good again.

Moving straight to component speakers is a good way to upgrade, and the extra work that can be done, is totally optional, but each step has its rewards....
I consider 2 or 3 way speakers to be a replacement for OEM speakers, not really an upgrade.
It takes very little work to add the crossover and a verada tweeter pod, once you've gone to trouble of taking off the door skin and putting in a two way.
I'd rather see some encouragement to go to an upgrade thats worth doing, then see if the audio bug bites, then take all the steps to extract all that you can out of them. If you don't get bitten, you'll have a front sound that will put a smile on your dial and impress the hell out your friends.

Me? No, I had plenty of time on my hands? But seriously I would like to post the basics up in front of the OP first and then let him make an informed decision, when he starts mentioning 2 or 3 way components I like to ensure I am on the right path first, so now he can chime in with the info provided what he is exactly after then I can help accordingly.

For replacement coaxils I like the Kicker KS60's ($120), or JL Audio TR600CXI TR ($147).

For 2 Way Splits I along with many others like the Morel Maximo 6 ($230) or Hertz ESK 165 ($299)

I think he said " 2 or 3 way or componenent" not 2 or 3 way component...

Ok while that is my mistake I don't think I would've scared him off at least I hope not otherwise that was too easy, theres just more info to let us know where he wants to head with it.......
