Hi guys

Ive recently purchased from a fellow member a 3L Brand New Crate Motor to drop into my 3L 96 TE Magna, now im not all that savvy with conversions so I will be having a mate help me but I will need to get some parts together prior. So....

Since the timing belt in there is rubber and would be well over 10 years old should I be replacing that with a brand new one?

This current motor doesnt have manifolds, I will be using the ones off my car, but I think I will need something like a VRS Gasket Kit, where can one of these be had? Keeping in mind As far as I know id need exhaust manifold, intake manifold (lower and upper) etc.

I will be getting the flywheel machined while im at it, but id also like to do the clutch while I can get to it easy enough, im happy with the one currently in the car so I wouldn't want a heavy duty one, recommendations? Keeping in mind Id need everything to start and finish the job.

If need be here are some pics of the motor.

Shelf life of a belt is 15 years, I've been told. But I would change it anyway.

Sure looks nice when the motor is new!

Would be cheaper to buy the gaskets you need separately. A VRS kit includes head gaskets, valve stem seals. Don't know how the valve stem seals would be in a motor that has been sitting around that long, frankly. Hope there is some oil in the thing.

Personally I would not bother with timing belt, the belt has never been run, is in the dark etc etc

The gaskets, there are none you need, all on the motor are metal gaskets, at most use some RTV on the water cross over pipe and some new o rings on the transfer pipe.

As for the clutch, i was very happy with the xtreme clutch i was running in my Ralliart for a while. Pretty sure it was the normal HD one. Very light, decent grabbing point and it still didn't slip at all with 245s and an LSD.

Sure is. My father-in-law has one. Love that car to bits.

I wanted that engine. If it was in NSW I would have taken it in a heartbeat.

With the inlet manifolds, decoke them before putting them on. They will be full of carbon build up, oil residue etc.

A big dose of carb cleaner should do the trick.

Do you mind if I ask, what did that set you back?

Will do thanks, im hoping once I do the motor and clutch and flywheel I wont need to do much more, except for the heater core of course :s

Would they have had oil in it? No idea if they put it in from factory

Typically, it will have a running-in grade oil. This will stop any corrosion. Not sure about the coolant channels though.

There is oil in it. Im with Dave on the coolant channels however.

There will be no coolant in it, so coolant channels should be fine.

How in hell will a brand new motor be full of carbon, strange.....

Dont go pouring carb cleaner etc down that motor, just put it in, run it in and then if you really must use some of the Nulon upper cleaner on it.

Drian the oil as well as get rid of the filter, put a new genuine filter on it with some HPR10 and you are good to go. Coolant chanels will be fine, just fill it up with some good coolant like agian Nulon and you will be good to go

Talking about his OLD inlet manifold that is going on the NEW motor

Timing belt will be fine as stated by all the others. Shouldn't need any gaskets apart from what Mal said.

Keep in mind that if you don't want a HD clutch you could always go a larger one, one from a 3.5 or 380 if you want to get a bit cut out of your flywheel.

Also keep in mind that HD doesn't feel any heavier to press than a standard anyway because it's the hydraulics doing the work, it just grabs faster/tighter.

Hi,

There are 2 different sizes of o'ring you will need (you will need to order 2 of each)
The size for the for the heater pipes are 15.9mm (you could get away without replacing them but they are cheap $8.23 list price at mitsu) P/N: MD030763
The size for the transfer pipe is 35.1mm (list price at mitsu $11.62) P/N: MD147332

Hope this helps.
