Hi - is there a way to remove this filter from a TJ Magna, without having to use a special tool?
Also, does anyone know a substitute/alternative for all the stupid plastic screws and the expanding clips they go into? Many ofthe plastic screw heads on my car have been damaged by previous owner/service people. Or is Mitsubishi the only option?

Supercheap has a whole range of suitable plastic screw clippy things. They are a pain, I know. Any ruined ones can be cut off with a sharp knife, or just put a drill bit through them. lol
Trans filter on a TJ? If you are talking about an external top mounted one, just a good fitting oil filter wrench will do, but I thought the filter was internal and only changed at trans rebuild time?

No it sits in the engine bay (at least in my TE it does). looks like a messy bugger to remove, but definitely do-able.

TJ should not have a trans filter externally unless it has a TE to early TH trans in it, nothing wrong with that though
The scrivets, best to replace with good ones, I generally have no issues with them, just dont push down too hard when removing them

another related question, if you cannot source the proper filter, is there any oil filter with the same thread pitch and seal size that will fit?

With external filters, would there be any point in swapping filters without changing the oil?
Is the filter full of fluid once the car has been left stationary for a wile ?

id suppose it would depend if the filter has an antidrainback valve, which i imagine it would.

3.5?
you can do it with a hammer and screw driver but you have to pull off the air intake to make room

Yeah, and then you can replace the transmission when you break the thread off as well.....
If you dont have the proper equipment to replace the filter, then take it somewhere that does.
You need to us an auto trans filter, not just a std oil filter and is no use in changing the filter and keeping your old dirty fluid
