View Full Version : Possible TPS sensor issue

I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is with my car but I'll post up the symptoms here for confirmation.
1. Intermittent idle fluctuating between 1,000 and 1,500 rpm with clutch in or out, followed by slow rise in RPM to 2,100.
2. Revs slow to drop on lift off, feels like the accelerator is "stuck" for a few seconds then drops as normal.
3. Intermittent stalling.
I'm thinking the TPS sensor is on its way out. Anyone care to weigh in on this issue?

Dirty throttle body. Tps sensor is possibly just built up with grime.

More likely dirty throttle body and a sticking air bypass valve

I'll give the throttle body and TPS sensor a good clean first. Does the TPS need to be recalibrated after removal and refitting?

You can remove the throttle body without touching the TPS. I don't think the TPS would be dirty - I can't see how it could be. More likely is your ISC and the throttle body being dirty. Fully remove the TB from the intake system and clean it very thoroughly with some carby cleaner. Use your hands and some tools to get into every nook and cranny. The ISC is easy to remove once the TB is off.
If you are going to remove the tps then make markings using a white pen or something so know you where to refit the tps. Readjusting via a mutlimeter can be tedious and annoying. I've done it about 2-3x and I'm still not happy with it. Acceleration is still quite jerky for me. Just remove the clip off the top of it (can be an absolute PITA) and leave it attached the TB.

TPS is sealed and cannot be cleaned, you cannot just mark it and put it back. Clip takes a split second to remove with a small thin screw driver to un clip it. (crow bars dont work)
My money is on a sticking air control valve, perhaps the ISC is playing up and poss but doubtful TPS issue
