View Full Version : I've had another idea for a sub... But is it better than having a slim active sub?

Hey guys,
I've just thought of a way I could have a decent sub in my HiLux. This is what I am planning:
I am thinking a slim 8 inch downfiring box (http://www.ebay.com....=item4164d07480 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PIONEER-UD-SW80D-8-SHALLOW-SERIES-DOWNFIRING-SUBWOOFER-ENCLOSURE-/280864257152?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4164d07480)) with this 8 inch sub (http://www.ebay.com....=item3cba5170d0 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PIONEER-20CM-8-Shallow-Car-Subwoofer-500-Watt-TSSW841D-/260823937232?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cba5170d0)) and this amp (http://jaycar.com.au...SUBCATID=1028#4 (http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AA0457&form=CAT2&SUBCATID=1028#4)) or this amp (http://www.ebay.com....=item2c5b270292 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/KENWOOD-KAC-M846-4-3-2-CHANNEL-AMPLIFIER-CAR-AUDIO-AMP-/190507844242?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c5b270292)). The way I will set this is I will put it on the hump at the centre rear seat as centre passengers usually put their feet either side of the hump. Also, instead of mounting the box in the downfire way, I will stand it up on its side so that the cup holders can still be used and face the sub to the rear of the car.

The reasons why I want to have this set up for a sub is because I know the slimline active subs just don't produce the same sound as a boxed passive sub.

However I have a few question about this.
1) Will this set up sound better than a slim active sub under a front seat?
2) Do you think it is practical to put the sub on the centre hump at the rear of the car?

Thanks

Setup will sound better as it has more box space etc

My question is why would you go for the jaycar 4 channel? You would be better off with a jaycar 500RMS or for a little more go a 1000RMS mono block

I would go for a high powered monoblock however the sub's power handling is only 120WRMS. I probably would have gone monoblock if I still had the one I bought for the maggie however I gave it to my mate along with my twin 12" kickers when I sold him the car. I am leaning more towards the kenwood though. As it is, the Kenwood puts out 180WRMS so even that may be overpowering it. I also decided on a 4 channel because I want some good quality splits for the front doors which I would use the amp to power also.

lol Sorry misread the nominal rating for 1200, Only did a really quick check :S Yeah a decent 4 channel will go well just need to figure out how to mount the box in the middle

I'd be tempted to throw the Jaycay 4 channel in there, the kenwood is a mere 180 Watts bridged @ 4 Ohms, where the jaycar is 300....
Dont worry about the 120 Watts of the Pioneer 8", the dictionary meaning of nominal is actually Minimal... so at least 120 watts not a maximum of....Better to have more turned down.

Thanks mate. As for that Toyota Tacoma sub enclosure you linked there, that wouldn't fit because mine's a dual cab and I don't really want to use up my centre rear seat. I was going to go for the kenwood as it is a bit cheaper and being kenwood it is a better brand. However in saying that, the one I had in my magna was a Jaycar response amp and it sounded good. As to respond to MR SPL, I was going to either screw it directly into the floor pan to mount it or get some 40mm x 20mm black aluminum angle, screw that into the floor pan and bolt the sub box (on the little legs on the sub box) to that. Of course I will evenly space it so that the bottom of the rear seat can still retract up properly and so that rear passengers can use the cup holders. I may even take measurements for this. While I'm about sound systems for the 'lux, what do you all think of this H/U: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-2012-Pioneer-AVH-1450DVD-5-8-Monitor-MP3-DVD-USB-iPod-Car-Player-/140703940491?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20c29bbf8b.

Dont tell Mr Spl that kenwood are better than Jaycar.....
And Jaycar amps used to to be made by mid to high amp manufacturers, slightly different electronics and rebadge, re-engineered exterior... Not sure about now tho.....
Wont agree the Kenwood is better brand in amps tho. Steammops and Mixers maybe....;)

Can of worms opened!!

LOL Still made by fairly decent amp manufactures, new heatsinks and providing you go for the new heatsinks you will be fine. Had some trouble with the older A/Bs. As for kenwood. . HA!

Actually, what do you think of this Jaycar amp? (http://jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AA0453&CATID=88&form=CAT2&SUBCATID=1028#4) . It looks like it has almost the same specs for around $30 cheaper.

Its identical except it has the larger heatsink. And i think off the top of my head the other one is a class D. Cant remember though

It doesn't say what class it is actually but I noticed it can run at 2-ohm bridged but that's not an issue for me as the pioneer sub's only a 4-ohm one anyways

The first was the class d, the link above is the AB Amp, the more powerful of the two and better sounding, with the D class a little bright, and the AB, a nice warm sound, I have owned both...

Bridging amps adds the combined two ohm loads of the two channels being bridged, and gangs them up as one 4 Ohm channel with the combined power rating of the 2.
Dont be surprised if inside the box of the AB amp, it actually rates it at 130 x4 @ 4 Ohm, 190 WRMS @ 2 Ohms, or 380 WRMS Bridged...

Cool mate, thanks for explaining that. I had a Class D monoblock in the maggie and it sounded great! However which one do you think would be better? Is it better spending a few $$ more and getting the class D or just go for the AB because it's cheaper?

SH00T
09-05-2012, 05:52 PM
Definately the AB, its is bigger, but sounds much warmer, class D in a mono wont sound bright.
Real Nice D class Amps have also got rid of the bright sound, these have not, while it might be as bright as some, it wont sound as good as the AB.
As long as you can fit the extra size of the AB, it will be a good 100mm or so longer than the D.....

And the AB is more powerful than the D, despite the specs reading the same. they crank for the money...

Yeah, I think I'll mount the amp under one of the front seats or behind the rear seat backrest. Just that, I will be using the car (and already have a bit) for 4wding so having an amp directly on the floor may not be such a good idea. Although it may be my only option as I'm not sure about mounting it on the back wall as there is little to no room in there. Also, so I can use all RCA for the front speakers and sub, should I go ahead and buy a H/U first? If so, is this one pretty good? (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-2012-Pioneer-AVH-1450DVD-5-8-Monitor-MP3-DVD-USB-iPod-Car-Player-/140703940491?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20c29bbf8b) <----- The one has 3 pre-outs so I can use one set for the sub and one for the front speakers, right?

SH00T
09-05-2012, 06:15 PM
Yeah, that a nice choice, but get a unit with rear USB, or SD card, you wont want a cd in the player while you are 4WD'ing, and you dont want a USB drive hanging out the front waiting to broken.....

But you are on the right track with the RCA business. It can done with one set of RCA's though, just split them with a 1 to 2 RCA adapter, and use the high and low pass filters on the amp to sort the sound out... But 2 sets or 3 is Better...

And don't import a DVD unit, they can get region locked...AVI's play good tho...

http://www.jvc.com.au/car-av/head-units/kw-avx746

That will do it, adds BT too.....

And the sub over the tunnel is a good idea, better than it hitting a flat surface, as long as its not too close...

3.5L_V6_TL_ES
09-05-2012, 06:42 PM
That JVC one is cool too. This is the BT version of that pioneer one (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2012-Pioneer-AVH-2450BT-5-8-Monitor-CD-DVD-MP3-USB-iPod-BLUETOOTH-Car-Player-/180847251106?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a1b560ea2). I currently am running the stock 6-stacker (mine has the 6-stacker because it is SR5 which is the top of the range for Hiluxes) but the cd player ain't working :( . Probably wouldn't mind having the USB in the front as the H/U on the hiluxes is not in a position where a USB stick could be snapped off. As per this pic (not my hilux but my model): http://cdn2.sulitstatic.com/images/2012/0219/091358518_08574510720179246ea97c6654cabc14d95cd89c 8c8e9db72.jpg . I had a JVC H/U in the maggie. I really liked it. Reliable, good clear decent sound and easy to use! I think to ease the financial pain of this exercise I might order everything one-by-one as I get paid. Now I need to decide what splits are going in the front :D

Cool!! Thanks man, you've been a good help. I think I'm on the right track for my audio system now. Do u reckon you could recommend some good 6.5" splits for the front doors?
Thanks

No probs, I have no Idea where to start with a DC Lux, NFI on the holes in the doors, but I would be tempted to look at splits with good mounting options, say with angled tweeter mounts that would suit the A pillar of the lux, so the tweets aim roughly a couple of inches above where the old style pull up door lock/unlock would be.....( on the opposite side of course).
I'll keep an eye out though, and ask some pro's, perhaps asking on the MEA forums might help...Just a warning though, they take their audio very seriously over there....Which is good, and bad....

I've already got 2 threads on MEA man. They weren't as helpful as I thought tho :/ . They had some good ideas. I was originally going to go for a slim active underseat sub but the guys at MEA recommended I should opt for a boxed passive sub. With some careful thinking and measurements, I was able to think of a good spot for the sub! As for the splits, I've been looking at kickers at JB, some Rocksford fosgate ones on ebay and some others on eBay.

Hang on I found this in the description : Sonic Electronix, Inc. cannot ship VIBE Audio products to Australia, Hong Kong, or the United Kingdom. :( Wonder why that is? Anyway, I found the V2 of those speakers in Australia here: (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vibe-Black-Air-6-v2-6-5-Car-Speaker-1set-/150807472929?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item231cd36b21) . So did you get an order in for the Vibe Lite air 6's....

Have you got tweets in the doors, or will you raise them up so it sounds better....Putting in a Two way system is good for Toyota, but in the door like in the Tacoma Build, is pretty much useless, undoing all their good work..
