changed the cv boots on a friends ts v6 manual
it lost some gear oil
told him to get some new oil
showed him where to top up the oil
in his wisdom he decided that the bolt on top off the gear box was an easier way to fill the gearbox
he now only has first and second gear
i,ve checked my manual and done a search cant find an answer
any help gratefully accepted

There is a row of about 3 bolts on top of the gearbox, IIRC. They hold the springs and detent balls for the different gear positions. Possibly stuffed it up, possibly. Ask him if any bits flew out. Ball goes in first, then spring. If he lost the ball but put the spring back in, that will be the reason.

Just looked at the manual, no clear picture of the bolts in question unfortunately.

Nice getting woken up at 2 am just for that! (Is the average intelligence of Magna owners getting lower and lower?)
If you can eyeball the car yourself, remove the bolt (It's a plug really) and see if the spring/ball are still there.

Oh well, he will just have to drive around in second gear and rev the BEEP out of it, at least he is still mobile. Serves him right for taking that "shortcut".

it looks like the restrict ball on the reveres lever bolt

Take the bolt out, fish out the spring and ball (magnet possibly), check that the car can now select all gears, put in neutral, put ball and spring and plug back in.

If he has put oil down there, you may be looking at some sort of hydraulic lock situation, which the above steps should fix.
