hi all. i have a 96 te exectutive that doesnt have a clock or trip comp.
how hard is it to retrofit? as im only primarily interested in the clock but will settle for having a trip computer too :)

ive noticed that the later (tf onwards) executives have this. but im unsure if it would be a plug and play fitment or means running some extra wires?
also how is it acessed etc? as i gather there would be a set of buttons for it i'd have to swap trims for to accomodate it. which means moving my lpg guage but that isnt a issue at the end of the day.

thanks for the help..

TH has them, I have tired to work one in without pulling out my dash and replacing looms, its pretty messy job.

My wife's TH does not have a clock in there. My TJ does and I want to put one into her TH. So I will be watching this space. I don't know who decided what cars got it and what cars didn't because I have seen a few TJs that don't have the clock there and they have the analogue dash. As the digital ones don't have a clock there.

As the years dragged on new features were added. The tj series 2 has them standard iirc.

Only h onwards verada have clocks. Only h onwards magna have tri comp and have no clock

I have done many and requires a modifies magna or verada (if you want a clock)loom to be fitted and is dash out

Loom needs to be modified and 2 connections to engine harness as well

Other way without dash out is a series 2 dash cluster and loom but loom still needs to be modified and ecu patched in

Hmm. I'll have to have a think before going to that extent.
Might be easier to grab a battery powered clock from supercrap and velcro it to the dash.

Might look into it down the track if i ever need to pull the dash out.
Thanks everyone for the input

Not sure on trip computer but you can wire in a clock fairly easily. I wired in a clock into my TJS2 and I didn't need to replace any dash harnesses. I did however need to muck around for quite a while working out which cables does what and how to properly power the clock, change the time, power the warning lights (seatbelt, battery & oil) and make it dim when the lights go on. I had an entire upper dash loom for sale that was modified but due to not interest I chopped it up and made use of the cables for other projects.

It is possible but you will need some basic electrical understanding and wiring & soldering skills.

You need these parts:
- Clock. TL ones are easiest to get your hands on as the clocks were standard across the range. Jollys currently have 2 TL's.
- TE/TF trip computer fascia - TL clock does not have any battery or oil lights stencilled into the fascia - TE does.
- TL clock harness + TE/TF trip computer harness (plug)
- 3 one-way push buttons
- 3 led's with holders that fit into the holes on the back of the clock.
- Multimeter
- Plenty of wire

How to wire:
- Harness has Red/Black and a blue wire - 12v power needs to be supplied to them. Make sure power source gets power when key is out of the ignition. I used the cabin light wires located behind the drivers A-pillar.
- Ground both the black wires - again I grounded to A pillar cables.
- Next to the blue wire should be a green/white wire (4th pin from the lef, on the top rowt) - this dims the backlight when the car's headlights turn on. (i.e. obviously when it's dark). Wire this to a light source that turns when the lights go on. I wired to the ciggie lighter light wire.
- On the bottom right side of the TL harness will be three cables - Grey,Orange & White - these control the time. You need to wire each of these to the push buttons in parallel and ground the other pin. The circuit is closed when you push the button and that changes the time or resets the clock. Not sure which colour changes time. Test it for yourself. I mounted the buttons on the upper glovebox surround.
- Then you need to power the different warning lights. Personally I used led's with bulb holders and pins that come out the back of them. I wired directly to those pins and then used a hot glue gun to hold the led's into the open holes in the back of the clock. .
--- Alternatively I suspect you could probably keep it factory looking by looking at the service manual and working out on where to add wires on the harness that would turn on the warning lights. The mainboard for the TE/TF & the TL look similar and I can see wires in the mainboard going to the open holes so it may be possible.

As for mounting & getting access to things. Once you remove the centre console it'll be a lot easier to get to everything. Getting to and wiring the pillar cables require some mucking around but I suspect you could probably find some other constant power source as well. I put the buttons in the glovebox - on the upper surround. Not the most practical but does the job. I'm now considering mouting the buttons on the plastic facia but this would block the view of the clock for my passenger. From what I've seen some of the KF verada Xi or KH+ verada's have clocks and the buttons to change the time where mounted on the surround. I thought of using those buttons but I would have difficulty, because my trip computer buttons are in the same spot.

Or just use the correct harness in the first place instead of spending weeks on that posted above
