View Full Version : High Pitched Squeal + Immobiliser Issues

Hey guys. I have two little issues which I'd appreciate some help with. Car is an 01 VR-X with 169,000km.
The first is that when I first turn the car on, there's a very loud high-pitched squeal coming from the engine bay. It's similar to the sound you get when you have engine noise coming through your speakers - but much, much louder. It only seems to happen when idling above 1,000rpm - once you're driving, or once the car has warmed up and idles below 1,000rpm, it goes away. Any ideas on what it could be?
The second is that for the past few weeks, my remote locking has played up intermittently. Sometimes you simply cannot lock or unlock the car with the remote. Or it'll engage once (and unlock the driver's door), but won't engage again to unlock the rest of the doors. It doesn't matter where you stand, or how close to the car you are - it seems completely random.
Shouldn't be the battery as I replaced it a month or two ago. I'm suspecting that it's something on the vehicle playing up, and not the remote. The reason is that when I lock the car with the remote and the security engages, I can unlock the car with the key and the alarm isn't triggered (which has happened previously when my remote battery has been dying). Also, the 'security' light on the dash is engaged when I lock the car, but is turned off by the time I return.

I think the high pitched squeal would have to be a pulley. IIRC its the idle tensioner pulley. As for the locking issue. It sounds like a faulty connection to your bem.

The security light is like the seatbelt man light. It is on for a period when the car is locked, but then goes off.
As for the locks, I have sent you a PM, but in addition to that, I have had several issues with a TJ BEM before. They are not uncommon.

Thanks, I was wondering that.
But previously, if I locked the car with the remote, and then unlocked the car with the key, it'd trigger the alarm. The alarm wouldn't turn off until I started the car. I did this multiple times when my battery was dying.
However, now if I lock the car with the remote and then unlock the car with the key, the alarm doesn't go off at all. Which makes me think it's something on the car.

That is perfectly normal mate, the door lock has a switch so if you use the key it will turn off the alarm. Not sure why it did not work that way before
Check the connection of the batter holder to the circuit board on the remote, is most likely that

If you keep setting the alarm off then maybe you are flattening the battery, therefore reducing its life.

Weird! Thanks Mal. Will look at that too.

The key setting off the alarm was resolved when the handles were changed. The little lock position switch for the Bem, was not on the lock cyl.
This was fixed.

Ahhh, that makes sense now.
So I guess that narrows it down to the remote fob working intermittently....

If you'd read the thread, you would have seen that I have recently replaced my battery in the fob. I also bought this fob around 4-5 years ago.
I will probably change batteries again in both my current fob and my spare fob, and recode both of them later tonight.
But I'm in no rush to buy new ones - at $80 it will be my second last resort.

I had same problem with remote, it was contacts or moisture so put some glad wrap around not too tight just enough to keep battery tight and water proof. try it

Replaced the batteries (again) in both fobs and taped down the battery holders with electrical tape (in case they've come a bit loose) and they're both working fine. At least it's not the car's electricals lol

I checked my other fob and the battery holder fell out , so I think thats the problem , over time they just break might have to get out the solder .
..GONE..

I'll definitely take you up on that! I'll have to bring my spare fob too as it was held in by a whisker lol
