Hi guys,
I've got my 1996 verada sitting outside, and while staring at it (they're beautiful cars really), I've just got my Provisionals and now i'm looking to do some things to the car and was wondering if anyone could possibly either sell me the parts, or gimme an approximate value on what i'd be expecting to pay.
So the list as follows:
1: Clip for the centre console is broken, i need to replace that.
2: Handbrake cable was loose, so I got it tightened, however now the actual handbrake has alot of "give" in it and moves alot while in it's cradle... either need a new handle, or a way to tighten the current one.
3: Wheels : possibly the best way of making a car stand out... I need some 17 or 18 inch wheels with tyres that will be able to be driven on from the offset... If someone could sell me some cheapies (i'm a uni student) that'd be helpful, or if you could tell me where to go to find some
4: I want radio controls... The buttons that go towards the center of the steering wheel, but control the volume, station etc... nothing fancy, where would I go to find such a thing
5: Electric aeriel is playing up, I need a new motor, it makes a continuous whirring noise and when I bought the car, it was unplugged, I assume this being the reason... However I stopped this by reprogramming it so it goes up 3 quarters of the way up which stops the whirring, but I want it replaced. So if anyone can tell me how much i'd be lookin to pay.
6: Exhaust... The rear part of the exhaust is slowely rusting away, and has a small hole in it, which I welded up so it holds for now, but i'll need to replace it from the very back to halfway through the exhaust. I was quoted approximately $220 plus fitting, is it possible to do it cheaper?
And thats about all I can think of now... I plan to get a new XR816 JVC double din head unit, and a set of speakers throughout which i've been quoted $400 including fitting.. and then I umm, am planning to get the car resprayed which i've been quoted $1200 to do.
This is my car btw

If there are particular parts you would like to purchase from other members, please use the Wanted to Buy section.

electric aerial will cost $150 brand new, or second hand $40 average
the clips can be bought brand new from a mitsubishi dealer, just tell them your VIN NUMBER
the radio controls could also be bought brand new but find a Verada wreck to pull them out of
and i go quoted $2400 from High tech mufflers for the whole exhaust done(headers, hi flo cat etc the whole shebang)

The console section should only cost you about $20 from your local Wreckers.
There is a bolt under the console to tighten the handbrake. Do a search. This has been asked before
See your local tyre shop and ask for a deal. They all do it. For 17's and decent rubber, expect to pay about $800 as a minimum.
Buy a later model verada steering wheel. They come with steering wheel controls from kj? onwards. Wreckers again. About $80-$100 for a leather one with airbag intact.
Aerial. Buy one from a wrecker for $50.
Exhaust sounds like the right price. Look into an aftermarket system with a bit of grumble. They flow better as well. Can be had for that price depending where you go.
1. They're all broken (centre console clip)
4. You've got an Ei Verada? They didn't come with steering wheel radio controls, but the Xi did. Even so... those controls can only be used with the factory head unit as far as I'm aware.
5. Electric aerial... probably not the motor that's broken, just the mast... which is easy enough to replace (search the forums for instructions). Generic aerpro replacement masts can be had for $29, $39 or $49 depending where you shop or you can get a genuine mits mast for ~$130 (mast only, not the motor)

Plenty of second-hand wheels in SE Queensland on www.boostclassifieds.com. There's a Tyre/Wheel FAQ in the DIY & FAQ section on the forums to give you some tips on getting wheels and tyres that fit.
The main thing you will need to keep in mind if buying second-hand is the load rating of the tyres you purchase - Magnas have a rather high load rating, so while you may find tyres that are a legal size, they may not be a legal load rating.
5: Electric aeriel is playing up, I need a new motor, it makes a continuous whirring noise and when I bought the car, it was unplugged, I assume this being the reason... Forum sponsor Mits-fix should be able to set you up with a second-hand electric antenna. I bought mine for $85 but this was a year or two ago. I imagine there'd be some listed in his eBay store - if not, drop them an email.
I was quoted $490 for a catback and a basic rear muffler (no tip). $220 for a rear muffler + piping to the middle muffler is suspiciously cheap.
And thats about all I can think of now... I plan to get a new XR816 JVC double din head unit, and a set of speakers throughout which i've been quoted $400 including fitting..
Fit it yourself and save your moolah.
I'm not sure what a standard Verada stereo sounds like, but I'm not sure if a cheap set of aftermarket speakers would make much difference. Perhaps save your pennies on the speakers and save up for something decent?
then I umm, am planning to get the car resprayed which i've been quoted $1200 to do.
A $1200 respray will look like crap. What specifically is wrong with your paint? If none of it is peeling or cracking, a good detail would make it look as good as new. If some parts are peeling or cracking, just got those panels resprayed by a good panel beater.

Mate don't do a respray! $1200 will look like junk!
With the wheels try get some vrx stockies or 380 wheels! Will look a lot better than $800 17ins from a rim shop, they will not suit the car and will require lowering etc
The rest of the stuff, u need to visit a wrecker and get all the parts from him will be much cheaper than searching individually - MITFIX is probably your best bet, good prices and services

Hmm well, the main paint areas are the front and rear bumper bars, near the boot, the paint on the bumper is just about completely gone, and the front has a couple scrapes on the sides.
Doors have a couple chips and scratches, nothing major, probably wouldnt require a respray, but yeah
Thanks guys for all your advice though... i'm gonna hit up my local wreckers and see what I can find

Hey mate,
have a look at my car, and the wheels in particular. I have a Gold KH Xi so our cars look pretty much the same. I found CJ Lancer VRX/Aspire wheels suited the car quite nicely without cheapening the look of the Verada. They're a perfect fit, and I had mine for $400 off a car with 2,800KM on it, so they're in brand new condition. Keep in mind you do have to add tyres on top of this, but they'll probably look better than most generic wheels.

If you are low on money then stay away from big rims like 18's. Not only are they expensive to buy but the tyres are too and wear through quicker. Most tyres for a set of 18's will be low profile/sport tyres and start from minimum $180/corner for anything even remotely decent. Also you'll be lucky to get 40,000km worth of milage from them. 17's are lighter, cheaper to run and are still quite comfortable.
If you want a set of cheap but tough looking wheels then you can't go past a set of Territory steelies. Spray them in black and they'll look pretty tough. They are available for quite cheap on fleabay and often they come with good tyres. I almost bought a set for $300, with 80% tread on a set of Yokohama A1 tyres.
This is how they look on a cashmere magna:

Admittedly I've never weighted the steelies or seen any specs on their weight, but are they really that heavy?

Mate you should see how these look with a black matt paintjob. I seen one lowered magna near my uni in white with those black territory steelies and a massive truck style exhaust coming out the back. Looked really tough. I was quite jelly.

an AEROPRO electric aerial is $150

Yep... genuine mits prices can be very expensive. Some of the overly expensive parts I've enquired about include: over $100 for wiper bottle, over $100 for electric aerial mast & $270 for one KE/F Xi central locking remote.
Sometimes you get a pleasant surprise though... to replace both the plastic leaf guards under the front wipers when the rubber seal perishes only costs about $50
