View Full Version : 95 wagon headlights not working...

The last couple days when I would turn my lights on there was a slight delay before they popped on. Last night when i was driving the headlights just went dead. The highbeams aren't working either...

The running lights are on, the dash lights come on when I turn the lights knob, all the signals work. Oh and i checked the bulbs, they 'look' prefectly fine, i had just replaced them a few months ago.

Does anyone have any previous experience with this sorta issue? any help is appreciated.

Cheers in advance

In a word, relays. The slight delay gives it away.
Turn lights on, give all the relays under the hood a flick with a finger, or tap with a screwdriver. If the lights suddenly go on, you found the dud relay.

IF not:
Grab a multimeter, and work backwards:
Check resistance of globes - they might look fine, but may be broken.
Check for voltage at the headlight plugs.
Check for voltage at the relays. Remove, reinsert.
Check fuses inside the car.

If no culprit found, it may be the switches on the stalk. Non repairable. Could be the wiring harness plug/socket in the dash though, where to stalk wiring joins to loom. Worth unplugging and reinserting to see what happens.

thanks for the quick reply guys,

looked into the relays, tapping them did nothing, but i took one out and it looked majorly fried/melted/scary. im guessing its a relay... its black with 4 prongs and was in the fuse compartment?

anyways ill try and locate a replacement tomorrow to see if that fixes it, can i buy them at a regular autoshop?

fried melted . is scary
i believe there is a headlight relay under the steering wheel as well
when you replace the fried one. with the light on for a couple minute,s check the in car one for signs it heating up

Yep... Thats it... Although it shouldn't be "majorly fried/melted/scary"... You may have a loose wire somewhere...Possibly under where the relay sits, or maybe at the Globe holders.. Do a check before putting in a new relay, or else it may end up the same as the current relay.

Little black box with 4 prongs = relay. Get some from the wreckers, should be plenty there as it's not a common failure item, but check the female connectors for it in the fuse box to see if any were damaged by the heat.

As above. You need to convince yourself that the heat came from inside the relay, rather than from the connectors in the fuse box, or it may do the same again.
