Hey all,
I have a 93 Tr Magna in Auto, the engine was rebuilt december 2010 so it is strong.
My auto box is starting to slip, and i'm looking at $1300 for a rebuilt with a tweak of the tcu (quicker throttle response, quicker kickback etc)
I am really wanting to do a manual conversion, but through my research a reputable gearbox specialist in melbourne said the auto vs manual the engines are of a different stroke, there is different sensors that need to be added/ removed, the bell housings do not line up e.g. auto engine to manual gearbox and also something about the auto ring gear not matching up with the manual clutch plate.
SO MY QUESTION.
YES OR NO CAN I CONNECT A TR MANUAL GEARBOX TO A TR AUTO MOTOR ???

Also how reliable is the manual gearbox, what are common problems, how strong are they and how much punishment will it take (I'm on P Plates and I don't drive like granny!!)
Thanks Brad

Normally the gearbox fails long before the engine needs a rebuild, but anyway . . . . . (assuming it is a 4 cylinder)
I know from personal experience the starter motor from an auto won't work on a manual, so I imagine the rest of the incompatabilities are true.
If you want to keep the car for quite a few more years, have the gearbox rebuilt. Don't bother with wreckers, you are unlikely to find a good original box after almost 20 years . . . . UNLESS you look out for, (and are lucky enough) to find a rebuilt one. Often a rebuilt box will be labelled by the rebuilder, so look at boxes with extra labels/engraving on the outside. Diff rebuilders often put a piece of thin metal foil under one bolt head inscribed with details of the rebuild.
A lot of the TRs at wreckers look uncrashed, so I assume that they were junked for engine or more likely gearbox problems.

The car was in the family 6 years before i got it, after my mum cracked the head for the second time and just before I got it the engine was rebuilt and made for dual fuel, so gas could be put on it
After reading over the forums today and seeing multiple post about the success of this conversion ( 1 person even stating 4cyl auto to manual)
i decided to call a few more gearbox specialists , so after calling 3 gearbox people in sydney, 2 in adelaide and a mutsubishi wreckers in adelaide, all of them said that excluding the wiring that would need to be done it bolts in, no difference in the bell housing, no difference in the stroke etc
So i remember a post somewhere saying that the auto starter motor would not work, is there anyway to fix this as my starter motor is only about 8 months old or will i have to replace it and is there anything else like this that has to be changed

the manual starter in 10mm longer. to reach the flywheel its an easy job i find taking the motor out so you can cut the hole for the manual shift cable,s and bolt up the gearbox the best way.
if your anywhere near sale i know where there,s a couple manuals waiting to be crushed

after thinking it over and how i would drive the manual, a mutual decision is that it is safer for me to get the auto rebuilt, with that do any of you know how to trick the auto when getting it rebuilt

have a look though the old threads see what you can find .
never heard of anybody killing a manual gearbox . plus there better on fuel .

Yes manuals are better on fuel, the car will be on gas in the next few weeks, I have to agree with my father if I put the manual in I will push it harder than the auto and it will not last as long
