View Full Version : Brake light problem

The right rear brake light on my 2007 VRX failed recently. I removed the bulb (a twin filament unit with one filament for the brake light and another for the taillight) and checked it out.

Both filaments seemed okay, but the glass was slightly discoloured so I fitted a replacement bulb.

The new bulb still doesn't light up when I hit the brakes, although the taillight works fine. The left and centre brake lights come on.

I checked the fuse for the right rear light and it seems fine.

Any suggestions? I'll be heading down to the auto electrician unless anyone can help me out with a possible explanation.

Jam something between the brake pedal and the driver's seat to keep the brake pedal down, then probe the socket with a multimeter to see if there is 12v showing. Might still be the globe, or corrosion in the socket.

I would also check the loom connection plug for corrosion

I had a simlar problem with my right (drivers side) a couple of months ago.

I fixed it by checking & adjusting the connectors so they were exactly the same orientation as those in the passenger side globe socket (they had somehow moved a little), and by swapping the globes over so the remaining original/stock globe ended up in the previously dud socket and the replacement globe was in the 'good' socket.

All worth a try - thank you.

Fixed. The problem was of my own making - the replacement bulb I picked up had its bayonets in a slightly different position to the original one. It wasn't actually in place.

Funny how using the correct part makes all the difference in the world...
