My KH Verada takes to long to change gears, with a light to normal foot it wont change gears soon enough, it wont change in to 3rd until around 50-55 k's an hour plus it goes back to 1st to easy, you don't even completely have to stop for it go back to 1st, for example when you slow at a give way or round about and then put your foot down it too easily goes back to 1st. The TPS is ok and the resetting and relearning the computer makes no difference, anyone have any ideas? cheers

Both 3rd gens I've owned do this too, its annoying. I've gotten into the habit lately of reaching say 2200rpm to 2400rpm and gently backing off and on the accelerator as if it were a manual without a clutch and it changes sooner. Still shouldn't have to. I'd say it would require mitsu hooking up to the computer and reprogramming something.

Thanks Shamous, I might have to do that, as I'm sure its not normal, I drove a Mazda 6 last week and it was in 4th when mine would have only been going into 2nd, the Mazda 6 auto is great, and it shows on the dash what actual gear its in, I like that feature. Thanks again for your reply, cheers.

Its not the TPS, I had that checked by a auto trans guy. I played around the TPS myself before going to the Automatic transmission specialist and made no difference.

I'd check or replace the TPS as MadMax suggests and then adjust/calibrate it as by the workshop manual (the downloadable one). This manual also shows how to properly test the TPS. One thing about going to Mitsui to get 'plugged in' is assured - they will lighten your wallet considerably.
By the way, if the auto trans specialist didn't reckon it may be the TPS, exactly what did he think the fault was?

Doesn't a good fluid flush usually help?

Every 3rd gen I've driven with a 4sp behaves this way. Just how they are.

At least one model of third gen did this. I've seen a video of it, it had the green light for Drive AND the green light for whichever gear it was in. I would love for my car to do that but I never saw any evidence of a 3rd gen doing it ever again. Maybe it was a Diamante feature or something.
As per the OP though... so glad I have a five speed steptronic. Awesome gearbox. Consider swap >.<

Its only because of the low ratio of the first gear.. if it changes up too quick, you will not get the power you need to keep propelling the car forward in response to your throttle position. the loaner i got from mitsubishi the other day was also like that. It is not necessarily a bad thing.. only one thing i dont like is how easy it is the gear downshifts from 4-3 at 60kmh, just for a very slight acceleration.

He didn't say much he just thought it was ok, but I don't think it is. I have cheacked the TPS myself and all seems fine with it.

Do the 5 speed auto behave differently?

Do the 5 speed auto behave differently?

Most definitely. Shift points are much better, acceleration is smooth, you don't even feel the changes, and it cruises at any road speed with no issues. Absolutely faultless in my book, except perhaps that if you're driving inappropriately or about to do a big overtake and decide you want to hammer it from cruising speed, there is a second or so delay before it figures out what you're doing and drops back a couple gears, but from then on it's sporty as ****. I absolutely love my transmission.
