View Full Version : Converting TJ Magna boot lid to KJ Verada?

Hey guys,
So I want to get rid of my GTV wing, which means either welding up and respraying my existing bootlid, or replacing it with another bootlid. My most convenient paint shop quoted me $500 to weld up and respray the boot, which tbh is more than I had anticipating. I was expecting a couple hundred less than that.
There's a white at UPullIt at the moment which is suitable, however obviously being a Magna boot it doesn't have my chrome garnish, which means no holes for reverse lights and possibly other differences, though afaik that's the only one.
So my question is, is it just a matter of cutting holes into the Magna boot for the reverse lights, and then swapping my Verada garnish and loom into the Magna boot, or is there more that needs to be done? For comparison;

i na word yes . probably not that easy to do tho. i'd be calling other paint shops . 300-400 would be a reasonable price. Normally painting alone would be $200 per panel factor in the repair on top.

The inner and outer of the Verada boot lid is completely different to the Magna.
While with E, F and H series is just a few holes to cut and drill, the J is not like that at all and can not be simply "cut" out
To paint inside and outside of a boot lid, that price is not all that bad given that there is several hours work as well as materials

Cheers Mal, that's a good answer. I won't buy the Magna lid then, I'll just shop around on quotes. :)

Do you like the chrome garnish? If you don't then you could just do a slight modification to the Verada tails and house the reverse light in the blinker section. Alternatively, you could fit up an led one like Mike (maggie) did.

Most definitely. I am absolutely keeping the Verada garnish, not getting rid of anything that makes it a Verada.

Well you don't have to get rid of the boot. You could use the TJ boot for yourself and when it comes time to sell the car then you refit the old bootlid.
I am surprised to hear that the J series Verada & Magna bootlids are different. I've seen them at the wreckers and they looked very similiar. Maybe its more to do with the mounting points and the holes in the bootlid. I don't know.
Maybe one of the SA guys might be willing to lend their bootlid for you to see the difference? Or try fitting up the chrome garnish onto a TJ bootlid and see if it can be mounted?

you could possibly mount the garnish ,but there would be wacking big holes for where the reverse lights are meant to be ,and ,what are you meant to do then.
Jakee,if you are so keen on a spoiler less look and can live with it ,just get some rubber grommets ,paint them white and bung em in the holes ,not perfect ,but five bucks is better than five hundred, and then just keep an eye out at the wreckers for a white Verada boot lid.

Nah there's no way I'm getting rid of the garnish for me, I mean. I'm not bothered by resale I'm bothered by removing one of the features that makes my car as awesome as it is. There is no way I will do that.
Mike, yeah I've thought about it but it would look too bogan spec for me I think. Trying to make a properly nice car. I see your point about using it as a temporary measure though... I'll have to have a bit of a think about that. Maybe see how it looks.

I don't think it's that bogan spec - I've done it and I'm not a bogan! I do have a black car but you'd seldom notice the rubber grommits on the bootlid. Mine are pretty flush with the lid. Only people that have gone close up have really noticed and they understand why I've done it.
You could get a 2nd hand bootlid but do be aware that the colour could still be a bit different. It's rare that two cars are exactly the same perfect colour out of the factory, let alone after 8-10 years of usage and exposure to the elements. Thankfully with a white car it's far less noticeable so may just be alright.
I got a cash-in-hand quote to have the boot filled and resprayed for around $250 but that was still too much for me. Not saying it's expensive for the work they would be doing but I don't feel like spending that kind of money for some holes to be filled up. For me I have the rubber grommits and this way when I sell the car I can refit the spoiler if the buyer wants it.
