Anyone know of a spot in the drivers foot well where I can get 12V with the ignition completely off but 0V with the car on?
Had to do a lot of messing aronud with a 5 pin relay and it was damn uncomfortably. Just want to clean it up as theres a few too many wires so more chance of something failing.
Would like to simply use a piggyback fuse set up as its only powering an "alarm" LED, just trying to deter some turds who tried to knock off my mums car and steal my bro's petrol. Its a lil distracting while driving.
Cheers Guys.
Edit: Sorry misread the post, didn't realise that you wanted 12V when car off and 0V when car is on

i would just put a micro switch in on the led
quick and simple

no spot on a car would have that kind of set up. You could use a realy and do some tricky stuff to do what you want to but easy way would be magnaman89 suggested.

you could also use the hand brake light wire,s .
hand brake on ,led on . hand brake of no led

positive of LED to constant battery and negative of LED to Ignition supply, both of which can be found on the ignition switch.
when the ignition is on the voltage across the LED is 0V and when the ignition is off the voltage across the LED is 12V.
this is the age old method used when installing a fake alarm LED.

There is a 4 pin plug under the center console that has a pin with 12v on it when the car is off. (For hands free kit or something?) It remains active with the car running. Another pin on the same plug is 0v when the car is off, but 12v when the car is running. You can achieve what you want by running your 12v through a NC relay. When the car is on the relay will energise and you'll lose your 12v.
I'm unsure of the fuse rating of the circuit the plug is on...
I'm using this plug at the moment to power my garage door clicker.

hmm hand break sounds like a good plan. Had no idea about the ingition supply going to 0V with the car on.
anybody have wire colours I need to look for? Thanks.

when i lived in midland . we done it to three cars no magna,s
you have two choice,s hand brake light on with the led or no h,b dash light.
after fitting the led,s the cars never got broken into again

No follow ashs advice! hes an auto electrician!
it doesnt go to zero, the differential between the two sides of the circuit becomes zero. as both would be 12 volt... constant 12 volt is always 12 volt. when the car is off the acc is zero volt giving 12 across the circuit, when you turn the car on the acc side is also 12 volt so there is no differential and the light would turn off.

Handbrake sounds like the best idea,
I just dont get why you had trouble with the relay? A simple relay could do it with just the acc wire powering the coil and the throw breaking the grounding to turn it off...

i didnt have trouble its all working said so in the OP. just dont like so many connections round my feet. more chance of something coming loose.

Yeah, got that it worked, just couldn't see how it would be too hard to tidy up
