Looking at getting into 4bying soon, What would be the best of these to get.
I was sorta thinking,
If i got a pajero it would be a v6 - the older shape either SWB or LWB
Trition would be the same - a v6
and the hilux would be either a single or dual cab 2.2 - 4Y (have driven one of these and they seem fairly gusty for what they are)
Opinions are greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I have an older Triton dual cab 2.8 non-turbo diesel. Very solid and reliable although it lacks power when climbing hills. Economy is pretty good at 10l/100Km.
Mine is a 5 speed manual 4WD. The freewheel hubs are manual but it's not taken off road much. Mine has done 290,000 Km, only issue was the water pump. Cost $60 for a replacement. The Triton is assembled in Thailand and lots of spares are available from Thailand on Ebay.

If you spend more time on the bitumen the Pajero has the best ride by far Imo. Hilux has the reputation to go the biff off road!! Vee
I've driven a fair few 4bys myself. family wise, you have - patrol, landcruiser or pajero
AUV wise - triton, hilux and navara
over a 4by for family i'd pic pajero, has all you need and comfort to, fuel efficient for its size.
ute wise i'd pick any of the 3 really :)

Hmm good points....
If i were to get a Triton, Would it be better than a lux offroad?
Also with the pajero, how good are these offroad?
Most 4x4's are as good only as their driver. Yes - some are better than others, and a "proper' 4x4 will go further than a pseudo one, but in general it is the driver who sets the limits. It all depends on where you want to go. A heavy Landcruiser will get bogged easier than a Suzuki in sand and soft snow, but the Suzi will run out of wheel travel in rough going. The NM onwards Pajeros have a lot more wheel travel than the Gen 2 models and therefore will get further (and more comfortably) than the older models (and the Hilux). I used to have a RangeRover - got sick of it piddling oil over my driveway. With a Rangie, you get gravel rash on the elbows when you corner because of the huge body roll, but the ride on any surface could not be bettered. When I bought my NL Pajero, I forgot to order springs - it rides a lot rougher than the Rangie, but overall is still a better car for my purposes - mainly towing a caravan with occasional off-road trips.
It boils down to what you want to do with the car. If it is mainly highway stuff, go the Pajero.

Based on your location, with Cununda (Sandy dunes) and Pine Forests being the main picks of off-road areas, you need to look at what you want out of the car as has been said above.
My pick would be either the Triton or the Hilux. I assume they're lighter. For sand, the V6 Triton would go alright.

My mates hilux was a beast.. Unbreakable.. Then one day its engine blew up. Just putting that out there lol, was a diesel, era early 90s i believe

i have personally driven most of the 4x4s mentioned above except for the nissans. IMO pajero, triton, hilux, landcruisers are all good options.. in reliability you cannot beat the hilux or landcruiser however if you could find them in diesel or preferably turbo diesel versions would be the best option ever.. more torque, more fuel economy!
P.S. If you're not fussed about year of manufacture, i would also suggest you look into the HILUX SURF from 90s, their turbo diesels were unbreakable. i still see a few really nice clean ones on carsales etc.

The Hilux and Landcruiser names immediately bring about a big pricetag to go with the name. You still pay 3-4 grand for a mid 80s Hilux snot box and you can't get a decent 80 series cruiser for under 6 grand. Either model in the diesel and you can expect to pay even more.
The Triton will provide good value for money, reasonable reliability and useful features like a tray!

My pick would be a GQ patrol,
Coil Suspension all round
Plenty of room 7 seats
Anything can get Modded to it
Tough Reliable Truck
Can fit 33's Without suspension mods
Simple Electrical System
Yes it may be 2200kg but still can smash along a beach quite well
Has a very Tough Underbody
Stock with rear LSD Manual Hubs up front
And Yes i have One!

I dunno what beach you manage to drag that across, but I was almost ready to start pushing my mates 4.2 petty across the beach. It might have rolled along faster. That said, anywhere else other than sand a Patrol would be the go.

if you cant drive a patrol in 4x4 mode along a beach ( well any 4x4 actually) than step out from behind the wheel of a 4x4 ...... simply put
beach driving is 4x4 basics

for family, with some off-road go for the pajero - excellent kit for the second hand price tag (quite cheap) and they DO go quite well off road.
for more specific off roading, i recko the hilux is the pick of those mentioned. my mate has had a string of hiluxes for his family business - fishing, lots of travel towing boats to remote locations - and he swears by them. Ironically, due to upsized boats he's now got, he just swapped his SR5 for a Ranger due to the 3tonne towing capacity. he the proceeded to suffer a broken hitch pin (keeps the towball tongue in the square tube fitting) at speed. luckily no damage. but he never had that trouble with the hilux!
as someone else said, the hilux surf sr5 is an excellent compromise! if you dont mind age, get one of the late eighties (i think) models with the removable roof for good fun summer camping trips!
(please excuse my poor grammar and capitalization - i type on a tablet and its not easy!)

No matter what, I will go with Pajero. The beast has all that one needs.
