Hey guys,
dumb question here, but in terms of super bright high beams (H1), what options do I have? Currently have HID low beams (H7).
Basically I just want something really, really bright for country driving. Also, what is the maximum wattage I can go two without getting in a sticky situation - keeping in mind I have 2 piece glass parabolic lights.
Cheers :)

Brightest option by far is putting projectors in the lows or highs. Contains the light output and spreads it to where you need it. With high beams you will see for KMs down the road aswell as really good spread on the sides. Contact me if you are interested :) Doing good deals at the moment!

I would do HID high beams too.
I have 35w HIDs in my low + high (paras) and love them. I did a fair bit of night driving on the weekend (Brisbane -> Glen Innes mostly at night, and Tamworth -> Armidale at night) and they really impressed me. Certainly not as good as a set of spotties, but for a set of built-in lights, I'm very happy. They're much better than the low beam HID upgrade, imo.
My only advice would be to go with 4300k bulbs, or maybe 5000k bulbs. My high beams are around 6000k and I don't like them - the blue tinge gets pretty annoying to drive with pretty quickly. My dad has 5000k HIDs and my brother has 4300k HIDs - they're both much nicer to drive with. More light output with them too.
If you're tossing up getting a set of spotties - my dad used to have a set of Hella 4000 Compacts on his F6X, and I reckon they'd look right at home on the front of a Magna. I did a quick mock-up a while back - if I did more night driving I probably would have put them on. They're pretty capable lights with a HID kit behind them too.

My brother's got those on his 4WD - albeit one pencil and one spread. 4300k 70w HID kit behind them. I would definitely recommend them lol
He has them on a Holden Jackaroo though, and the lights are about the same size as the standard headlights, so they don't look out of place at all...

Well I was going to do HID high beams, but since I live in Sydney city it'd be too annoying since I'd have to wait for them to warm up - and if there is an oncoming car it'd shorten the life of the globes turning on and off all the time. I'm only upgrading my high beams for an interstate drive, so I went with some decent Phillips 100+ globes. So I'll have my HID low beams, fog lights and then halogen high beams :)

Once HIDs are warmed up, they come on virtually straight away. My HIDs are only cheapies so they probably take around 5-10 seconds to turn on fully - but once they've been running for a minute or two, they'll turn on immediately if you need to dip your lights.
I agree they're pretty pointless in the city - I can't remember the last time I used mine for any substantial period of time. However, I have family that live regionally so I get good use out of my high beams - and for that, they're invalueable. I previously had a set of Philips +50 bulbs and the HID high beams were a worthwhile upgrade. If you drive outside of Sydney regularly I'd give it some serious thought.
A suggestion - it might be worth turning off your fog lights. They're only good for lighting up the road immediately in front of your car. Your eyes will focus on the bright light, which will make the distance seem duller.

If anybody here prefers to use standard globes rather then HID i highly reccomend philips over the usual Narva and Calibre (is that what its called) that the normal shops sell.
I was told that 5000k globes give only a month or so of use before they blow, i went on ebay and bought 5000k phillips diamond visions, this was around 7-8 months ago and they are still going. I have my lights on when i drive during the day and during the night and have done about 25,000kms in that time, pretty dam impressive for a 5000k globe.

Just as Maggie did even with myn having 70watt H.I.D's in the high beam I went the same way with a pair of good spot lights as well http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/album.php?albumid=701&attachmentid=45552
