View Full Version : Drivers side mirror sagging?

Noticed this morning my drivers side mirror is starting to sag, for lack of a better term. I adjusted them yesterday as I noticed it was pointing low, and then this morning it was pointing low again. I tried to adjust it up while stopped at the lights but it was already at the highest point, yet the mirror was pointing so most of what I could see was road.

I tried to play with it by hand (Not in a dirty way) and it feels very loose, I ended up pushing the top part of the mirror in, heard a click and now it's facing about right, and I can adjust it to a tolerable range again.

So my question is, are these mirror held on by a clip or adhesive? Did I snap it back into place or is it just going to sag again and possibly even fall off?

The glass is clipped in. Not taped.

So it probably became unclipped at a corner.

Negatory, the glass is most definitely taped. I noticed tonight driving home from a party that my side mirror was more or less being held on by the chromatic wire and has sagged and very nearly fallen completely off. The glass piece has completely seperated from the motorised bit, there is thick white double sided tape between them but it's all given way for some reason :S

Does anyone happen to know what tape I should use? Would an auto place or hardware place have some sort of suitable super strong double sided tape that would work for a side mirror?

I used some 3M double sided tape to re-attach my chromatic mirror about 6 months ago and it's still going strong. However, I only put a strip across the top and bottom and the lense vibrates way too much. I'd definitely suggest running tape around the entire perimeter and a few strips in the middle to eliminate this problem.

Ok, what parts came off?

I have pulled several of these mirrors apart before, and they are not meant to be taped at all. Mostly because after a while, the tape fails. The motors effectively move a plastic plate. The mirror clips onto that plate in 4 places (or should)

Maybe a photo would help.

It's pretty haphazard taping for factory work so I suspect it's somebody elses doing, however, there appears to be nowhere on the detached surface where clips were or should be.

I see the problem now.

The part that the glass is taped to (black plastic thing), is actually part of the glass assembly.

It clips to the mirror motor.

So you need to unclip it, and then reglue it back to the glass properly with sikaflex or something very strong and water resistant.

So if you unplug the chromatic wiring, and taked off the glass, then unclip the panel that has that white tape on it, you should be able to see on the back of the glass where it should be glued.

The factory does not use double sided tape.

Yeah I follow you. I actually was just figuring that out for myself now, the back of the glass itself has a black factory adhesive which has also failed, then the previous owner has obviously done a temp job on it with double sided tape.

Suggestions for what and where I can buy it? I don't have anything stronger than the same double sided tape he has used (Which I will use to get me to and from work tomorrow so I can get to somewhere with a superior adhesive as it has now 100% fallen off :P)

Sikaflex should be ok. I have had to use it on my mirrors which are totally different designs to the aussie ones. I have a different plastic backing piece but with the chromatic glass. I have not had a single drama yet.

Yeah man I'd appreciate that. I've replaced the double sided tape with some slightly wider and better placed (He did his like a spastic) double sided tape, which is just an interim fix until I get some Sikaflex to permanently fix it. For now it's working, will see how it holds up after couple days of driving and shutting my door :P
